Austrian father accused of sexually abusing daughters for 40 years

BRAUNAU (BNO NEWS) -- An 80-year-old man from northwestern Austria is being investigated for allegations he sexually abused his two daughters for at least 41 years, police said on Thursday.

The case was recently discovered in the Braunau am Inn district of Upper Austria state after the elderly man had again tried to rape his eldest daughter after a period of three months, but he was injured when she pushed him away.

The suspected sexual and physical abuse began in 1970 when the victims were about 4 and 12 years old and continued until May of this year. "Furthermore, he prohibited them from socializing and lived with them in just one room of the house for decades," a police spokesperson said. The victims are now 53 and 45 years old and slept on a small, wooden bench in the kitchen.

"They were repeatedly threatened by the accused who threatened to kill them with weapons," police said. The wife of the man, who is also the mother of the two women, died in 2008. It is unclear if she knew about the alleged abuse of their children, but police say she was also a victim who was physically and sexually abused.

After the man recently attempted to rape his eldest daughter again, the woman pushed him away, causing him to fall. "The 80-year-old could not get up without assistance," police said. The man received medical care two days later after a social worker found him on the floor, after which authorities were notified.

No charges were filed as of Thursday as the investigation is ongoing.

The case carries echoes of the case of Josef Fritzl - an Austrian man arrested on April 26, 2008. He was later convicted of enslavement, incest, rape, coercion and false imprisonment of his daughter, Elisabeth Fritzl.

Josef held Elisabeth captive for 24 years in a concealed part of the basement of their family home. She was raped numerous times and gave birth to seven children and had one miscarriage. Josef also pleaded guilty to charges of murder by negligence of his infant son/grandson, Michael. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

Since then, a number of similar cases around the world have been discovered, including a case in Belgium in which a man allegedly raped his daughter over a period of at least 20 years. Reports said the man raped her daughter twice a day and fathered a child with her who was given away for adoption.
