Poll: People satisfied with Govt’s policy statement

BANGKOK, 26 August 2011 (NNT) – Suan Dusit Poll has indicated that the majority of Thai people are satisfied with the Government’s policy elucidation to Parliament, saying they now have a better understanding of various policies.

The survey was conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University during 23-25 August among 1,108 people residing in Bangkok and its vicinities for their opinions regarding the Pheu Thai-led government’s delivery of its policy statement to Parliament. On the scale of 10, the respondents gave the Government 5.61 points and the Opposition 5.38 points.

Most of them or 62.16 percent said they were content with the Government’s policy statement as well as the debate, reasoning that they got to learn more about the policies to be implemented in the future. Another group accounting for 22.97 percent stated that the parliament session allowed the pros and cons of each policy to be brought to light while 14.86 percent appreciated the precise timeframe for the debate.

On the other hand, 60.38 percent noted that they were agitated by the prolonged and pointless debate. 28.30 percent were unhappy about irrelevant topics being brought up frequently while 11.32 percent said they lost their interest while listening to debaters reading from papers.

Asked what they learned from the policy debate, 62.79 percent of the respondents cited details of the Government’s policies and its direction, followed by the determination of both the Government and the Opposition in working for the country at 20.93 percent and the MPs’ and senators’ manners and abilities to control themselves at 16.28 percent.

Regarding their favorite debaters on the Government side, Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung came in first with 44.26 percent, followed by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra with 39.34 percent and Minister of Information and Communication Technology Group Captain Anudith Nakornthap with 16.39 percent.

On the opposition side, the majority voted for Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva with 48.39 percent. The second and third runners-up were Democrat MP Chuan Leekpai and Rak Thailand Party leader Chuvit Kamolvisit with 32.26 percent and 19.35 percent respectively.

I must have missed the news about Yingluck actually taking part in any of the debate.

Yes you did. Most of the people that have criticized her activity did not listen to the discussion anyway. Carry on.

I decided against my comment.......it does not need stating the obvious anymore.

It might have been more interesting if they had asked about the content of the policies rather than the quality of the presentation and debate.

"Do you think the government is delivering its election promises?" would be a good start.

A bit off topic, in Australia a while back a red-haired harpy appeared on the political scene, backed by a couple of con-men, and started espousing policies mostly based on racism. With no political experience and the IQ of a budgie, she managed to pull around 10% of the senate votes, mainly from geriatric hicks opposed to the way the ethnic mix of the country was changing.

It amazed me that elderly gentlemen in particular thought that she was beautiful, with a lovely smile. Fortunately, she faded into obscurity after while.

I hope that matched the other parallels I see here today.

Poll: People satisfied with Govt’s policy statement

Was this before or after the people realized the PM has stated to 'push for the proposed policies' rather than 'stand behind the policies we stated here today' ?

Oh yea, I'm sure the majority of Thais (say at least 51% of around 68 million total Thais) watched/read about/closely followed the government policy elucidation to Parliament. Not sure a poll of 1018 people in the Bangkok general area accurately represents the views of tens of millions Thais across the country. The only thing the majority of Thais watch are the soap opera's (to include my Thai wife).
