Govt denies press intimidation

By The Nation

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung on Thursday rebutted a motion on press intimidation raised during the House question-and-answer session, acting on the prime minister's behalf.

Although PM Yingluck Shinawatra was supposed to answer queries from MPs, House Speaerk Somsak Kiatsuranont cited past precedents to argue that she could designate a Cabinet member to take up questions from MPs.

In his motion, Bhum Jai Thai MP Supachai Jaisamut said he suspected the government had condoned the chain e-mailing by the red shirts to intimidate a Channel 7 reporter.

Chalerm rebutted that the government had no involvement in the incident and that the suspect had already scheduled to report to police by next week.

"This government will definitely not interfere with the press," he said.

He said from his point of view, the e-mial in question had no message which could be construed as an act of intimidation. He also blamed the reporter for provocation by framing her question to the prime minister like she was an opposition lawmaker, hence leading to the e-mail to question the profession conduct.

Two police raids net healthy drug haul

National police chief Pol Gen Wichien Pojphosri on Thursday announced the narcotics suppression police's success in arresting six suspects and seizing 45 kilograms of crystal meth and 80 kilograms of marijuana in two separate cases.

In the first operation, the narcotics suppression police 2 conducted a sting operation to buy 100 kilograms of marijuana at Bt400,000 in Nakhon Phanom from a drug dealer identified as Dey. Police then arrested Dey's accomplice Noi Tocho, 45, who delivered 22 kilograms of the drug and checked the cash while Dey narrowly escaped the arrest. Police's later searched Dey's home and found another 58 kilograms of marijuana.

In the second operation, the narcotics suppression police 3 and provincial police region 9 arrested three Malaysian men between the ages of 19 and 28 and two Thai women in their 30s in Songkhla's Sadao district while allegedly trying to transport 45 kilograms of crystal meth worth Bt145 million to Malaysia. Although the five are claiming innocence, police suspect they got the crystal meth from the North and stored it in Bangkok, before bringing it to Sadao to cross the border.

Chalerm to seek release of Veera and Ratree

By The Nation

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said Thursday he planned to visit Phnom Penh to seek the release of two Thai activists jailed there on spy charges.

He said his visit would come only after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's official visit to the country.

Two Thai activists; Veera Somkwamkid, leader of the Thailand Patriot Network and his assistant Ratree Pipatanapaiboon, were arrested and given up to eight years in jail in Cambodia on charges of spying.

The two were among seven Thais including a Democrat MP, charged with illegal entry after crossing into a disputed border area in December last year. The incident happened during the Abhisit government.

Five of them were freed after their jail terms were suspended. But Veera and Ratree remain in jail and their royal pardon requests have been denied.

Chalerm is in the government of Yingluck, whose brother, former PM Thaksin, has close ties with Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen. Thaksin was a personal economic adviser to Hun Sen. The appointment led to downgrading of mutual ties between Thailand and Cambodia.

Chalerm told reporters that his son, Wan, is a friend of Cambodia's deputy navy commander in chief, so he would probably use this connection to help seek the release of Veera and Ratree.

Police seize 80 kgs of marijuana

Narcotics Suppression Division 2 has conducted a sting operation, offering to buy 100kg of marijuana for Bt400,000 from a drug dealer identified as Dey in Nakhon Phanom.

Police then arrested Dey's accomplice Noi Tocho, 45, who delivered 22kg of drugs and was checking the banknotes for authenticity while Dey narrowly escaped. Police later searched Dey's home and found 58kg of marijuana.

Operatives from Narcotics Suppression Police 3 and Provincial Police Region 9 caught three Malaysian men aged 1928 and two Thai women in their 30s in Songkhla's Sadao district while allegedly trying to transport 45kg of crystal meth worth Bt145 million to Malaysia.

The five suspects maintained their innocence, but police believe they got the crystal meth from the North, stored the consignment in Bangkok and took it to Sadao for smuggling across the border.
