Does anyone know, is 3rd Jan 2012 a public holiday? As 31st Dec 2011 and 1st Jan 2012 are both on the weekend, and are normally public holidays, does that mean that 2nd and 3rd are substitute public holidays? NB I already know that 2nd Jan is a holiday, but I'm unsure about the 3rd.

For private sector workers in Thailand, Saturday is considered to be a normal working day. In other words, there is normally not a substitution day for a statutory holiday which falls on a Saturday.

An important note here: The Thai govt. will often declare an extra day of holiday in situations such as this. Whether they do or don't, and if so, whether they declare Dec. 30, 2011 or Jan. 3, 2012 to be the extra day, won't be known until sometime in December 2011, and probably not until sometime in the 2nd half of that month.

Are you sure? I work in the private sector -- large Thai multinational -- and we always get substitution days when the holiday falls on a Saturday. We recently got our list of public holidays for 2012 and yes, both the 2nd and 3rd are holidays, so I think you can assume they will be for most businesses.

My company has a holiday on the 2nd but no holiday on the 3rd, but the list I have does not include New Years Day substitution day which would be Tuesday 3rd Jan.

Interesting, I don't have 2012 work calendar yet, but this year says we have 30th Dec (Fri) as a substitution day for 31st. That being so I would assume that 2nd Jan (Mon) would be substitute for 1st.

Our holidays always seem to follow government holidays, so would be surprised if this is wrong.
