NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- Eight people were injured on early Sunday morning when a teenage gunman opened fire during a house party in New York City, police said. A suspect is being sought.

The shooting happened just before 3.40 a.m. local time in the 47th Precinct of the Bronx, which is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. Most of the victims were teenagers.

"Upon arrival, officers determined that a total of eight people sustained gunshot wounds during a party that was taking place at the location," a spokesperson for the New York Police Department said. One victim, a 24-year-old black male, was shot to the chest and transported to Montefiore hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The remaining seven victims, five males and two females, were removed to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Their ages ranged between 11 and 24.

The suspected gunman was identified as Oneil Dasilva, a 17-year-old black male from the city of Mount Vernon in Westchester County, which lies on the border of the Bronx. Police are asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Dasilva to call police.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
