Police hunt for bank robber

BURIRAM: -- Police in this northeastern province have intensely hunted for a masked man who robbed Siam City Bank's Muang District Branch Wednesday afternoon, taking with him more than 3.6 million cash.

The incident took place at around 04:00 p.m. when the man raided into the bank through its back door, pointing his gun at bank staff and sweeping the money from the bank's counters and safe drawers.

The robber also cut off the bank's phone lines and its close-circuit camera system.

He then ran away by a motorcycle whose driver started the engine waiting for him in front of the bank.

Police rushed to inspect the scene, saying the robber may be an insider as he apparently knew locations inside and surrouding the bank well.

The police have hunted for the robber, who is still at large.

i find it strange that the thai police will rush to investigate robberies like this , they seem to make the headlines and there is always a police spokesman ready to delive a soundbite for the press.

but if its a murder or a rape , then the police just seem to shrug their shoulders and carry on with their lunch.

on the itv news last night there was a long report about a gold shop robbery during which 4 , yes count them , 4 gold necklaces were stolen , the report showed half a dozen thai forensic cops , all done up in white "clean suits" and surgical masks and boots dusting for fingerprints and picking up stuff from the floor etc. whilst the press were allowed to enter the shop and film and handle the empty necklace box to their hearts content.

the interview with the policeman seemed to indicate that this was a crime of national importance , and that no stone would be left unturned until these dastardly criminals were caught.

go figure.

Lets get this right. The robber took 3.6mil Bhat and got away on a motorcycle.

What size bag did he have?? :D Given the limited range of Thai currency in common usage there must have been a LOT of notes. These would take up a lot of room. So are the cops looking for a large backpack?

In $ terms this is a large bank robery even by western standards over Au$100K. Most get away with $10K to $60K on a good day. It is the white collar crimes that get the big money. :o

They'll get him soon...

just wait until some poor guy in the immediate neighboorhood suddenly starts driving a brand spanking new honda civic car, loaded with gold around his neck...

Them Thais are not known for their restraint when they suddenly come into some cash, legal or not :o
