Body of foreign national found in river

By The Nation

Pathum Thani police on Tuesday retrieved the body of a Caucasian woman from the Chao Phraya river in what they believe is a murder case.

Barge crew alerted police at about 8am that they had found a canvas car cover they suspected had a body inside floating in the river, which had become entangled with a barge.

When police opened the canvas, they found the bruised body of a woman with blond hair and blue eyes. Inside the canvas cover, police found rocks packed inside a fertiliser sack, which were used, they believed, to sink the body and keep it on the river bed.

Her wrists and ankles had been tied with cable, police said, adding that the woman was about 20 to 25 years of age.

Police also found towels they suspected of belonging to a hotel in an upstream province, possibly Ayutthaya and Angthong. They will use the towels to help them investigate the identity the victim.

Police would also contact some foreign embassies, to confirm or otherwise the nationality of the woman.

you are correct, the embassies wont be able to help

now if thailand actually had a proper ploice force, it wouldnt be that difficult to identify her.... IE using Face Regonistion software against the deceased and from the database of pictures tken from arrivals into Thailand

RIP

First, RIP to the woman, and condolences to her family. Very sad and unfortunate for such a young like to end in such a way.

recently there hasn't been reported any missing tourist, so probably she has been murdered recently. Even if not consulates, police and emmigration would be able to establish her identity, based on the pictures on entry at the airport and comparing with database of travellers, who have overstayed their visa. On the departure the picture is taken again and person is marked as leaving the country

Yes. I am very surprised that the BIB have actually called it a murder. Normally when a foriegner is found deceased they try to come up with some cock & bull story other than murder. I guess the evidence in the case is just way too compelling.

I guess the BIB will just trace the towels back to her hotel and get the photocopy of her passport that she would have to have given [by law ]to staff when checking in.

"....the police believe is a murder case"

To be fair to the Police can't say they know its a murder case because they don't know for sure. The same language would be used by most forces throughout the world.

RIP and lets hope for her families sake the case is resolved quickly.

Crappy little pics taken with a webcam aren't going to help much with a woman who's been floating in the Chaopraya for any length of time.

Actually, I used to own the exact same Logitech web cam that they use and the still pics are are pretty good quality and resolution. The bloating of her face from being in the water for a while might make it a bit difficult but facial recognition software could at least narrow down possible names to a very short list. It's then quite trivial to submit the names and photos to the embassies of each person on the list to have them contact families to see if any of them are unable to contact the person. If it was anywhere else, I probably wouldn't be surprised if they don't already use such common technology that even the shittiest Vegas casino has been using for years. But, TIT.

First time I notice you have not blamed some Thai. I will bet a Western. Sorry for the family

I don't recall seeing many cases of Thais murdering falang women aside from that rash of cases in Samui some years ago. I have seen a fair number of cases where a Thai man raped a falang woman in Pattaya, usually some drunk Russian. Would be a bit surprised though that someone would mruder their girlfriend/wife while on holiday in Thailand but I guess it does happen if it's a fit of rage sort of thing. Maybe she's a Russian working girl that pissed off her pimp or something.

At any rate, it's nice to see the police not declaring it a suicide. At least not yet.

If immigration purchased face recognition technology (assuming they don't have it already), the uproar on TV would be deafening:

1. Big brother watching;

2. Don't they have anything better to spend money on, like fixing broken sidewalks?

3. Fat cats aren't really interested in the technology, they just want to buy something so they can skim off their commissions

You can't win on TV.

I recall at least one case -- an Israeli who stuffed his wife/gf in a suitcase after cutting her up. I'm sure it's not the only instance.

White girl 25-30. Tattoo on right shoulder. Deceased approx 4 days. Hands and feet bound, placed in a fertilizer bag with rocks and then dumped into the river. This report goes onto say they believe the crime was commited elsewhere by no less than 2 individuals.

Big case going on in Chiang Mai about a English women who was murdered by an 'asian' [DNA evidence]. Fingers are being pointed at a local Uni lecturer. There a quite a few cases around the country actually. Some have been solved, tried and convicted. Other are yet to get there. It isn't all that rare.

We were discussing foreigners being murdered by their foreign spouses / partners while on holiday -- not foreigners being murdered in general.

Fortunately the body didn't sink to the bed as hoped by the perpetrator. I guess that the floods and rain have caused heavy currents and churned up the water. A body also naturally contains a fair amount of air and the bag may collect moreso if it's not tight and sealed.

Perhaps the eyes looked blue due to no oxygen? or did the writer just add that bit in to go with the blond (presumably bleached) hair?
