DSI set on hacker's trail

BANGKOK: -- A special board of the Department of Special Investigation yesterday authorised a probe into a recent hacking into a website of the Justice Ministry, the first approval of its kind against cyber crime.

Pol Colonel Yannaphol Yangyuen, chief of the DSI's Bureau of Technology and Cyber Crimes, said the hacker's identity had been narrowed down and more evidence was being gathered to bring criminal charges against him that could lead to up to five years in jail.

The hacker altered portions of the website and the ministry's database, thus destabilising the internal computer systems of the ministry's 11 departments.

Yannaphol said the websites of a number of other state agencies had also been hacked but they had not submitted formal requests to the DSI for official investigation.

DSI HAS AGREED TO ACCEPT HACKER ATTACK ON JUSTICE MINISTRY'S WEBSITE AS SPECIAL CASE

The Department of Special Investigation has agreed to accept the case of a hacker attack on the Justice Ministry's website as a special case under its jurisdiction.

The DSI's division responsible for cases concerned with information and communications technology has given the green light for the department to take the case into its jurisdiction. This case dealt with a hacker having infiltrated and modified information on the website of an agency under the Ministry of Justice.

Investigation has already yielded an idea of the person who committed the act, and the Department of Special Investigation is seeking evidence to make the arrest, on the charge of damaging state information, which could lead to five years of imprisonment.

The DSI has further disclosed that there are other agencies that have faced similar activities, but did not report the cases to the DSI.
