Poll: Government´s flood relief measure gets 5.8 points out of 10

BANGKOK, 18 September 2011 (NNT)- The Yingluck government has scored the equalizer against the former Abhisit government in the handling of flood situation, according to a recent opinion survey by Assumption University.

The ABAC poll was conducted during September 1-17 among 4,869 people in 24 provinces. Seventy-seven percent of the respondents live in flood-hit areas while nearly 23 percent live in areas that have never experienced flooding.

Fifty-four percent of the respondents in flood-hit areas said they had not received any help from the government as their villages were far from the main roads. They also revealed that only families of community leaders had got the state’s assistance.

Forty-six percent said they were taken care by the government agencies.

When asked to evaluate the government’s performance, the respondents have given the Yingluck government 5.8 points out of 10, which is equal to that given to the Abhisit government.

According to Director of ABAC Poll Noppadon Kannikar, the survey has suggested that the government needs to take prompt action to resolve people’s difficulties before the public distrust builds up.

Don't really believe a poll that would ask 23% of the people interviewed as NOT living or being in flooded areas... Well... at least the new govt. hasn't handed out rotten canned fish!!!

This sound like an extremely strange poll, with probably almost zero cedibility.

4,869 people polled in total.

Only 3,750 people polled in flooded areas.

Only 1,725 people polled in areas that were accessible i.e. not "far from the main roads"

If we want to deduce from the polls demographics, we would conclude that only 35% of the people live in a town or city that is affected by flood waters ( and they were all well taken care of ) while 54 % live in flooded remote villages. Utter waste of time.

Thailand needs to launch a large scale flood control project.

That would be a great opportunity to employ for 300 baht/day tens of thousands of workers equipped with shovels and pickaxes.

It appears that this govt is now taking this issue in hand fast and furious unlike many of the past administrations. I would have given this govt an 8...
