Gravelrash
Pity this seems to have fizzled out. My GF doesn't speak any English and it is about time I started expanding my Thai vobulary again. She was most impressed when I hit her with this one: พูดจนลิงหลับ pôot jon ling làp To speak until the monkey sleeps.

Andrew Hicks
sa-naam-bin = airport(liSA went to vietNAM to but her rubbish in the BIN)<span style='color:red'>Ponounce as one word</span> haawng-naahm = washroom / toilet / WC (I flew from HONG kong to vietNAM by plane) barn = house / dwelling (the cows are in the BARN at the farm) mai-ow = do not want (i cut MY leg it hurt and I shouted nOW) Ain't it difficult. I have been disatisfied with all Thai language learning materials except one. An author called James Higbie published 'Essential Thai' with Post Publications and it is amazingly good. The transliterations really do establish the pronunciation and the tone markings are the clearest I've see. The selection of language is always exactly what I want to know. If this is out of print, he's done another shorter book and a longer, complex grammar all equally good. I've seen them in Silom Centre in Orchid Books, a shop well worth visiting anyway. (Hope I've got the name right!) No doubt this has all been trawled through before, but I thought that for what it's worth, I'd add my modest thoughts. Nervously, as I usually get flamed on this Forum. Perhaps Thaivisa Psycho Geezer doesn't stalk this forum. Andrew

Yes it is phonetically difficult I tend to always hear it (and say it) as you pointed out with a double sound for the consonant ป however, both thai2english.com and thai-language.com transliterate it with only the final consonant sound and not the repeated initial consonant sound. Thanks for the translation. You only left out ชาวเขา - hilltribe (the ethnic minority groups in the North). I might have translated it as "When hilltribe children go to study in kindergarten, the biggest obstacle is language." I was wondering if someone knows whether this word that can be correctly pronounced either way? Edited June 2, 2007 by CSS
CSS
today’s word selected by srachaiประชาธิปไตย อ่านว่า pra chaa th'ip pa tai ความหมายว่า ระบอบการปกครองที่ถือว่าประชาชนเป็นใหญ่หรือระบอบการปกครองที่ถือเสียงข้างมากเป็นใหญ่, เทียบคำ (อก. democracy) ประชาธิปไตยของเมืองไทยไปไหนหมดแล้วล่ะครับ? タイの民主主義はどこにいってしまったのだろう? Where has democracy of Thailand gone? Thanks for the word. Indeed, where has democracy of Thailand gone? If you don't mind I'd like to analyze your sentence for study myself. ความหมายว่า I don't think I've heard ความหมาย used with ว่า can anyone say whether this is acceptable? I know หมายถึงว่า could be used in this case but I would think one would need to use คือ with ความหมาย(คือ) รบอบ Thanks for this word. I initially thought it was a spelling mistake for ระบบ but then I looked it up and it is its own word and correct in this context. It seems the two words are very similar: the former meaning system ; regime ; order ; form ; pattern. and the latter, system ; method (according to Thai2English.com) From these definitions they are only slightly dissimilar. However, I noted that capitalism uses ระบบ ระบบทุนนิยม Does anyone know how to differentiate these two words more clearly? Or are they essentially interchangeable? With your last sentence: ประชาธิปไตยของเมืองไทยไปไหนหมดแล้วล่ะครับ Is it possible to use ไปไหนหมด with abstract nouns? Or must it be used with nouns of number? eg. ประชาชนไปไหนหมด or เพื่อนฯไปไหนหมด If not what do you think of saying ประชาธิปไตยของเมืองไทยหายไปไหนแล้วล่ะครับ? srachai
Hello Khun CSS: Thank you very much for your kind suggestion. I’ve used to type Thai scripts by blind touch method so without looking at keyboard, I can type. It is good for me, not stressful at all and not tired of. My secret for typewriting is that I use Japanese IME to input Thai scripts into my notebook. I just type Roman alphabetic letters and PC automatically changes into Thai scripts, otherwise I have to watch on my keyboard all the time I type. Thank you very much for your thoughtful words.
