Evidence in Mubarak trial confirms snipers shot at protesters

2011-09-19 08:29:20 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Video footage which has been presented in Cairo Criminal Court this weekend confirmed that snipers shot live ammunition at demonstrators during Egypt's January 25 Revolution, the Al-Ahram state-owned newspaper reported on Sunday.

The footage presented by lawyer Amir Salem during the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak showed five armed men standing on top of the Ministry of Interior building in Cairo and shooting at demonstrators. The evidence included CDs with footage recorded during the revolution.

A video also showed a protester, identified as Moataz Mohamed Ali, bleeding to death from his head. The evidence further included medical reports which reveal that Ali died from two bullet shots to his head, according to the newspaper.

Mubarak, his two sons Alaa and Gamal, former Interior Minister Habib Ibrahim al-Adly and six other former senior officials are currently on trial. They face charges over the deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters during the 18-day uprising, which toppled Egypt's 30-year-long ruler.

According to Amnesty International, at least 840 people were killed and over 6,000 people were injured during the violent repression. During the trial's first session, Mubarak pleaded not guilty to charges of ordering the killing of anti-government protesters and abusing his powers.
