PM tells cabinet she wants quick and concrete results

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday chaired a meeting of Pheu Thai Cabinet members to discuss translating the party's campaign promises into action.

At the three-hour meeting held at Pheu Thai headquarters, Yingluck made it clear her first order of business was to produce results, quickly and concretely.

Those present at the meeting included Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha, Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit and Justice Minister Pracha Promnok.

Regarding the campaign pledge on security, the prime minister wanted tangible progress on quelling violence in the three southernmost provinces, Yuthasak said.

Today, the prime minister is expected to convene a high-level meeting at Government House to issue a new policy directive on the southern insurgency, he said.

Next month, she will convene her first meeting as chair of the Internal Security Operations Command to follow up on the situation in the strife-torn region, he said.

Deputy Transport Minister Kittisakdi Hathasongkroh said the prime minister instructed every Cabinet member to devote full attention to tackling the people's grievances.

"Yingluck told her ministers that their top priority was to eradicate the people's hardships," he said.

The government was determined to resolve problems faced by the people without delay, he said, adding the premier promised that the ministers would have her full backing on the budget earmarked for tackling grievances.

Ministers will have to submit their respective work progress reports every Monday.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk said each ministry would have to draw up a work plan specifying the time frame to complete their work, which could range between one and four years.

Preecha said on instructions from Yingluck, his priority would be water management.

They know the rural poor are with them for at least a while and they know that as long as it is the arms of the establishment and democrat party that are attacking their schemes they have little to worry about. What the establishment want and need is for PTP to say several of its headline pro-poor schemes cant work because they got it wrong. The chances of PTP saying that are negligible

I don't think you're the only one. By now some Democrats might be busy checking if the PM can have her cabinet meeting in the cozy confines of the Pheu Thai party headquarters. Probably as exception rather than rule it is allowed. Maybe there is no regulation on this.

The reason for a meeting in Pheu Thai headquarters is probably the presence of all its facilities, advisors, phonelinks. All of that may be lacking in Government House. Note to some Dept. PM 'take care of this'

By this, do you mean that if they break the law and lie in court, and are made to stand down, that Thaksin will not prevent them from standing straight back up again - as was Samak's fate?

Quite plausible. It would be astute to try and neutralize some yellow shirt support. The hardcore yellows will not be bought off, but many on the periphery could be easy pickings.

Boat Carrying Minister Capsizes in Lopburi

A boat carrying Natural Resource and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk capsized in Lopburi Province. He was investigating the flood situation when the boat went under. Media reports are speculating that the boat was carrying too much weight. No injuries were reported.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Thursday denied that her brother Thaksin had influenced her Cabinet by instructing the ruling Pheu Thai Party what to do, in his Skype call to Wednesday's gathering of the party's Cabinet members.

"He just offered his moral support to the Cabinet regarding their job of serving the people," Yingluck said.

She explained that the meeting was held for Pheu Thai's Cabinet members to exchange their views on various issues one month after the government has been running the country.

"We really had a meeting among ourselves, and Thaksin just offered his encouragement in the final part of the meeting," she said.

The last PM was k. Abhisit, but he was an elected PM. As MP he was elected by other MPs to be PM. Just like k. Somchai (who will represent his brother-in-law Sunday at the match) before him and the late k. Samak before. Even k. Thaksin was in that position two times.
