Imac 28"

Featured Replies

I have the chance to get a Macintosh iMac 28", but a friend and my (trusted) farang computer repair both told me about warming problem in the use of this all-in-one without a proper aircon room. Actually I use a Lenovo running 24/7 since 3 years ago (except the vacations ;-) without any mayor problem (dust cleaning and new video card). My room is not so hot but I'm not so happy if I should open the aircon for many hours.

Any feedback?

When one reads the operating manual, it gives ideal temperature variants etc....

It always says "non condensing" enviroment .... which I think would be caused by cooling the room with AC and turning it on & off...

From what a friend who does computer repairs tells me, this is a big cause of computer problems (condensing?) .... Moisture would be produced as the room temperature rises...causing insides rust out etc...

I just use a fan behind the computers I have...and make sure to clean vent areas periodically...

Hope I am correct on that!

This extra fan scenario is good advice. It does not have to be a giant fan that sucks the air out of the room but just a small one that moves the air out of the area. Good advice for most computer setups, Mac or otherwise.

I got it. Hope do I know what setting to use. I just put it at half and I can see temp coming down. not sure what the temps should be though.

Most of the time I just lower the brightness setting on the monitor to keep the temp down. I do set the fan higher when watching a movie. I don't let the temp go over 50 degrees centigrade.

Note that smcFanControl only sets the minimum speed - that's because the computer still needs to be able to set higher speeds as needed (or it would fry...). The default minimum speed is set with an air-con temperature in mind so in Thailand it can be too low.

If the iMac gets hot to the touch, it's probably too hot. Too hot won't cause immediate problems but it does increase the chances of electronics failing prematurely. Particularly the HDD.

27" iMac base fan speeds are:

1000 odd

1100 hdd

940 cpu

Increase as needed, a few 100 RPMs will probably not make it noticeably louder + still lower temperatures... on an older MacBook Pro - the kind that got really hot - I increased base speeds by 300 RPM - it was still really quiet, and way cooler.
