THE OFFICE OF THE NARCOTICS CONTROL BOARD HAS INDICATED THAT AROUND 3-5 NARCOTICS FACTORIES STILL EXISTED IN THAILAND'S NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES

The Office of the Narcotics Control Board has indicated that around three to five narcotics factories still existed in Thailand's neighboring countries.

Office of the Narcotics Control Board Secretary-General Kridsana Phol-anant (กฤษณะ ผลอนันท์) yesterday boarded a helicopter flight to inspect the Thai-Burmese border and the Thai-Lao border in Chiang Rai Province. Police Lieutenant-General Kridsana said officials have found that several narcotics factories belong to minority groups in Thailand's neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, narcotics police in Ayutthaya Province yesterday arrested a man who was smuggling almost 100,000 pills of methamphetamines. The man confessed that he was hired for 500,000 baht by an unknown man to deliver the illegal drugs to an unidentified dealer at an undisclosed gas station.

Currently, the Department of Probation is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police to establish more rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, as there are insufficient facilities at present. Five new rehabilitation institutes will be created throughout Bangkok, each with the capacity of accommodating about 600 people.

The UNION of Myanmar is made up of a myriad of ethnic groups. The Wa State Army, which is blamed for much of the drugs production in Myanmar, controls an area in a special administrative zone situated in the north of the country.

The minority groups in Burma, or even individuals masquerading as representatives of some group, enter into a business relationship with the government. The government allows a certain amount of autonomy (not hard as the government has little presence in the hills) in exchange for revenue. And when someone like Khun Sa wishes to retire they simply transfer the franchise and allow the business partner a retirement home in the capitol. But the minority groups only run their respective territories with their modern Chao Faas.
