The procedure, known as VIA/cryo for visualization of the cervix with acetic acid (vinegar) and treatment with cryotherapy, can be done by a nurse, and only one visit is needed to detect and kill an incipient cancer.

Thailand has gone further than any other nation in adopting it… VIA/cryo is now routine in 29 of 75 provinces, and 500,000 of the 8 million women, ages 30 to 44, in the target population have been screened at least once.

"Some doctors resist" the cryotherapy approach, said Dr. Wachara Eamratsameekool, a gynecologist at rural Roi Et Hospital who helped pioneer the procedure. "They call it 'poor care for poor people.' This is a misunderstanding. It's the most effective use of our resources."

Sure, Pap smears are great, but if the majority of Thai woman don't have access to them, it's not going to do any good. Glad that they are allowing nurses to do this procedure in rural areas.

My only complaint is the age of the target population. IMO it should be much lower.

Screening should be done at 18 (some countries do 21, but even that's a few years late) or when you become sexually active, whichever comes first. Screening should also continue well into your 60's.

But, you have to start somewhere. I'm just really glad that this project is up and running.

Unfortunately VIA (visual inspection with acetic acid) still requires an internal exam which is exactly what tends to deter Thai women from getting a thin prep/pap smear.

And I would disagree with the statement that the majority of Thai women don't have access to thin prep/pap smear, they certainly do, but the service is underpromoted by government hospitals and underutilized.

I listen to a lot of talk radio from the USA and listened to a very interesting night where an Italian doctor explained that cancer was a mould and he was treating it with simple bicarbonate of soda and having great results.

I have said for years that if you stop and think for a minute you will realise that they don't cure things any longer. In every other science they have come on in leaps and bounds unlike medicine. The last thing they actually cured was Smallpox and that was decades ago.

The trouble is the big pharmaceutical companies realised a long time ago that there was very little profit in a cur but Billions in a treatment.

People are under the impression that these " doctors / scientists " are there doing what they do for the betterment of mankind. They are not. They are there doing it for a profit which is why they have cured anything for a long time and never will sadly !

So all of these "doctors / scientists" are evil puppets of the corporations, huh? Sorry, but I know several and they are anything but that. You don't think that any of these researchers might have family members of their own who may have suffered or are suffering from cancer or heart disease or some other terrible ailment?

I don't doubt that there may be a few bad apples out there but by far most of these researchers are fine people who deserve our deepest gratitude for their efforts. Sorry, but I'm not buying this conspiracy theory.

Why haven't they cured anything since Smallpox then ? Even with all those with family etc ?

There actually thousands upon thousands who think cancer is a fungus. People dismiss as its not at the frontline of the media.

Thai women over the age of 20-something know quite well of the possibility and necessity of cervix cancer prevention, although they do not quite realize how life-saving this really is.

Dying from cervical cancer is still considered normal.

And knowing that they can do something about it does not mean they do it.

Thai women of young age have easy access to pap smear and LEEP if needed (the therapy of choice, which is not poor medicine for poor people).

Pap smear is done in provincial hospitals for far less than 1000 B.

LEEP at Chula costs 6000 B, if you have social security (ie if you have a job) it is free at places like Rachawithi Hospital and places outside Bangkok.

If you care about your wife/gf and if she is too shy, too afraid or too lazy to have her first pap smear done, you may pay for it in the more comfortable setting of a private hospital.

Eg Dr Srinanaat at Samitivej Hospital has been highly recommended by her patients. "It did not hurt at all, and she explained everything!" Cost about 2000 B.

(If LEEP is necessary you may want to do it elsewhere, it is 60-80000 B at Samitivej)

1.) Sheeple : Come on now. You can do better than this worn out cliche.

2,) I watch very little television so I must admit I don't know much about Fox or CNN. Are they saying that cervical cancer is cured with vinegar? Why not? Works for fish and chips and is great with olive oil on salads. I would tend to trust the New England Journal of Medicine and other respected sources over your Fox or CNN though.
