I intend to obtain a 60 day single emtry tourist visa here in the USA. I have not visited Thailand for over 1 year. I have previously enjoyed a retirement visa but this year will only stay in Thailand for 40 days, then visit Burma for 7 days and return to Thailand for 20 days only.

Question: When I return from Burma will I be granted a 30 day tourist visa when I arrive. I am hoping to avoid paying the additional multiple entry charge of $ 40 on my original 60 day visa. Hope this is clear.

US citizens get 30 days upon arrival if they are traveling by air and 15 days if they arrive over land. It is different for some other countries.

The 30 days is a visa exempt entry, not a tourist visa.

How about a quick report in the travel forum when you get back from 'Burma'? I think a lot of people would be interested in hearing about it.
