Report: Libyan fighters claim capture or killing of Gaddafi

2011-10-20 19:18:55 GMT+7 (ICT)

TRIPOLI (BNO NEWS) -- Ousted Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has been killed in a firefight with revolutionary fighters near Sirte, Al Jazeera claimed on Thursday. The report could not immediately be confirmed.

The channel, citing a senior official with the National Transitional Council (NTC), said Gaddafi was captured after a gun battle near Sirte. "He's captured. He's wounded in both legs. He's been taken away by ambulance," Abdel Majid, a senior NTC military official, told Al Jazeera.

Sources told Al Jazeera that Gaddafi later died of his injuries, but neither Gaddafi's capture nor his death could immediately be confirmed. NTC forces have previously released information regarding Gaddafi and other officials which later was found to be not true.

In response to the rumors, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. government had no information. "The State Department cannot at this time confirm media reports on the capture or killing of Muammar Gaddafi," she said.
