Currency Exchange Advice

My Thai lass says she will wait until we get to LOS before changing her savings (in UK £tirling) and claims the best rates can usually be gotten at BKK airport, upon landing.

Does anyone know if she is correct?

No, very wrong .Airport exchange rates at airports are very bad. You will lose. Big time. If you must have money ,only change as much as you need for 1 night. Go the next day to an official foreign exchange bank ( any retail bank) ,and change there .

SuperRich exchange will be your best bet if you have lots to change.

When in Thailand, I actually found little difference between the banks at the airport and the banks outside.

Also, for the best rates, change £->Baht in Thailand rather than the UK.

The airport is lower by 2 baht, just get enough for your taxi ride.

SuperRich or JJ Mall (Orange sign, cant remember the name) main (upper) floor off the the left when you enter.

Very true, the Thai banks at the airport frequently offer better rates than their in town counterparts but I've yet to see them beat Superich - whatever you decide to do do not make the exchange in the UK or you will get raped.

having looked on-line I would say Krungsri bank give the best exchange rates for sterling

What is the rates Krungsri is giving ? Can it beat SuperRIch of 48.8 ?

superrich. there are 2 near big C near central world. The one with the orange sign is the second best, the green signed one has the best rates (9 out of 10 times), only by 50 satang but every satang counts

This is very true, don't even think about changing it in the UK, neither high street nor airports.

use bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx to compare rates of the major thai banks. Unfortunately, for the local money exchangers they are not listed. Sometimes they give better rates than the big banks, and may be willing to exchange coins as well.

I have always found VASU on soi 7/1 sukhumvit, just across from Subway restaurant, to give a better rate for changing cash than the banks.

Why don't you go to thier website and look? The rate changes every day, so what's relevant now may not be later. Besides the Baht is down against the Pound mid price yesterday was 49.24 at one stage.

This is a good comparison site to give you a guide before you leave, as has been mentioned on no account change sterling for bahts in the UK, they will try and tell that the thai rates in thailand that we tell you are not possible, so that you change in the UK. If you want to change £20 in the UK for a bit of change thats the most you should do. ITS ALWAYS A BETTER RATE HERE in THAILAND.

I was actually referring to banks/exchangers inside Thailand. Usually the country of entry will give you a better exchange rate, but sometimes a border country (at or near the border) has some decent exchange rates also. When I crossed over from Malaysia into Thailand, the final stop we make before crossing over had an exchange booth and they gave us an excellent exchange rate down to the cent for MYR >> THB. I doubt Thai bank would have accepted change or smaller bills, which I had lots of them.

Thanks KHR and pomchop.

More useful info as I will be in that area for a few days.

I think she meant she will get a better exchange rate at the airport then if she did the exchange while still in the UK. Getting past that, the airport exchange rates are a bit less than other places. On my last trip I saw things like: 30 baht to the 1 USD versus as low as 29.2. So that is measurable. 2 to 3 % difference in general I have seen over the years. Not a big deal when quickly changing up for 1000 baht just to get some local cash for the bus down to Pattaya.

Having read your post, I interrogated my lady further and you're quite correct.

She didn't mean change all her money at BKK airport, just enough to travel on beyond (and using up any dirty/defaced £tirling as some Thai exchanges are reluctant to to change notes that have been written on or are worn).

Got some really useful advice from this thread, so thanks everyone.:jap:
