Banks No Longer Exchanging Uk Pounds !

I live in the south of Thailand and have been here for the past 16 years and thought I would go and change some UK money , Before you all say dont go to the bank because there give you a crap rate go to the money changers in the market or high street .

However down in the south of Thailand its the other way round or it is in Songkhla , I went into the Bank with about £140 in Twenty Pound notes only to be told be dont accept them because because they may not be real ? I wonder is this just Banks in Songkhla or is it the same all over Thailand ?

As for the money changes in the market or high street yes they will change your money but the rates are lower than the Banks since they know the banks wont accept it .I was wondering is this just one more push to try and get you to use your ATM card since you may remember the extra 150 baht that they charge you on all non Thai ATM cards .

I will try again today other wise I must go all the way into Hat Yai as there is no way am I accepting 45 - 46 Baht when the going rate should be around 48 , So I am wondering is this the same all over Thailand or just in the south I wonder ?

Cheers

You were probably just dealing with a dim and/or ignorant individual.

I once had a telephone discussion with a bank clerk that insisted the pound (sterling) symbol was the Euro symbol. I tried to explain that as a Brit I would know these things but of course, she insisted I was ignorant of my own currency.

Just try again tomorrow and you'll probably get a better response.

I would agree with Moonrakers. It's often just the individual at the till. I see the same sort of thing at immigration... different person = different information

Just a thought but have you had this money with you since you arrived? They have changed the 20 pound note in design since you arrived so if they are from your original days in the uk the bank clerk was correct in not accepting them as they would no longer be legal currency in the uk. If they are more recent versions then yes, just an idiot bank clerk!

Hi Guys

No the money is not that old as only got back from the UK a few months ago , The bank or should I say 2 banks said they could not accept the money because it might be counterfeit , My own thoughts are there trying to push you to use the ATM machines which as you know for the past few years have charged a extra 150 baht on top of what your own bank charge you . I use HSBC and by every time I use my ATM card it cost £8.00 just to get to your own money .

But today I will go into Hat Yai and see what rate I can get from the money changes over wise I will just keep it as 46 Baht is a megger rip off .

Cheers

Just a question...I don't know the answer.

What will it cost you to go from Songkla to Hat Yai?

Changing 140 pounds...will the maybe 2 Baht you get per pound be enough to compensate you for that trip and the time it takes?

Remember, I dont't really know the answer...I'm just asking.

The only problem I have had changing £ notes here in Nakhon Sawan is that they have to be perfect, any tears or bits missing and they will not accept but otherwise no problems, no money exchange counters here like in Pattaya, we dont have that option. But I have a very good relationship with the Bank here, gets cups of tea and treated like a valued customer. I wrote an e mail to head office telling them a great service I get here, how wonderful the manager and staff were etc etc. It did the manager and staff no harm, they were delighted and I get excellent service. Head office rang me to thank me for the e mail as well. It can do none of you any harm to try a similar tack. If you wondering which Bank its the yellow one Ayudyha.

Well, he will get 280 Baht extra, the local bus would be let's say 60 Baht (can't remember) time is free so he would make an extra 220 Baht.... just answering. :)

Well I went into Hat Yai in the end and went to the money changer there at Hat Yai Plaza and got the rate of 48.50 which is allot better than 46.00 , Yes the min bus cost me 27 baht each way but got a far better deal .

I was only cashing £140 because thats all I wanted to cash .

Cheers again for all the feed back ..
