BANGKOK, Oct 24 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday dismissed allegations that her government has tried to conceal information on the country's worst flooding in decades.

The prime minister conceded that the floodwaters have arrived Bangkok through varied channels and reasserted that the Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) has no intention to cover up information, but that new factors repeatedly occurred during the ever-changing flood scenarios.

Ms Yingluck said she instructed the Department of Irrigation to find ways to reduce the release of water at Klong Hok which is now spilling over into surrounding areas but there are some technical obstacles due to the torrential waterflow.

Regarding the plan to expel the deluge of water which hit Bangkok, the premier said she is holding talk with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra today to find the solutions.

"We split the operations into two parts, the protection of economic zones and rescuing stranded victims," Ms Yingluck said.

The premier said the situation is critical. She expressed concern that many officials are fatigued from the operations dealing round-the-clock with flooding in 20 provinces.

Ms Yingluck called on both public and private sectors to allow their flood-hit employees the day-off so that they can protect their homes.

When asked why the government did not declare a national holiday, the prime minister explained the government fears that there will be insufficient government staff to provide assistance to the people. (MCOT online news)

From the OP:

"new factors repeatedly occurred during the ever-changing flood scenarios."

The scenarios kept changing because of a 'moving target' issue I guess?

"there are some technical obstacles due to the torrential waterflow."

K Plodprasob still running his 1000 boats?

"the premier said she is holding talk with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra today to find the solutions."

It's 20:47 (aka 8.47PM) too late for today, why not tomorrow, why hurry?

"New Factors" started appearing back in August. They seem to have garnered the attention of this "government" a week or two ago.

It was posted on MCOT at 14:57 which means she announced it even earlier than that.

I stand corrected. Do you know if in the mean time the two have met?

This Nation flash suggest it, but not sure:

October 28-31 possibly holidays: Sukhumbhand

The Nation October 24, 2011 9:01 am

A four-day period starting from October 28 could be announced national holidays, to allow time for Bangkok residents to get themselves ready for flooding, according to Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

He claimed that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra may propose to the Cabinet in its meeting on Tuesday to annnounce the holiday break, when a peak tide is scheduled.

There has not any been news reports earlier about Yingluck mentioning the idea. She is personally against it, as there would be no officials at work sufficiently to fight off flooding or implement preventive measures.

Isn't there already a thread going on this subject?

Yeah, really, to keep an overview of the flooding threads has become as difficult as making sense of the government announcements.

"new factors repeatedly occurred during the ever-changing flood scenarios."

The scenarios kept changing because of a 'moving target' issue I guess?"

Is this really surprising or an issue for cynical remarks or criticism?

Sometimes I really don't get you, people (you - being passionate YS bashers).

If SUDDENLY a barrier is breaking (f.e) that would be an "ever changing flood scenario"!

I know, the govenment has made mistakes/ is totally incompetent/ stupid...you name it.

But this statement is actually one that can hardly be put down!

Governments from before Thaksin's have been bickering over this plan or another for flood control.

But as it happens in countries with a government controlled by families, the many vested interests and corruption never brought a sensible plan to fruition.

Thais are stubborn. The Chinese gave up on annexing Thailand about 1 thousand years ago labeling as 不羈,散漫 or 難以控制 , unruly, undisciplined difficult to control Over time the last adjective became Thai. Thais, as they once auto labeled themselves Land of Smiles, changed the meaning of the Ancient Mandarin expression to Free.

Among many other reasons, Thais of this or any administration never sought the help and/or advice of a country that has controlled natural events of this kind and whose efforts and techniques prevailed to this day: Holland.

To politicized this event that no administration (Yellow, Red, Green or Pink) in power could mange due to the enormity of it, is absolutely immature and silly.

The rabid democrats are eager to tar and feather Yingluck, the furious reds are eager to destroy the remnants of the last administration and even began turning against this one, the Yellows are simply overwhelmed to think or do anything.

At a time like this, this should be a constructive forum where practical, important information should be exchanged to aid those in affected areas or about to be affected.

But it appears that the arm chair strategists are yet to understand the extent of their extemporaneous pettiness.

I know, my comment will be followed by rebuttal and more of the same blah, blah, blah. Alay goday!

Gee, why not announce a national holiday instead of a statement of emergency. Makes perfect sense to an artichoke. These people have lost, or have never had, any common sense whatsoever.

When the Bangkok governor said one (two?) days ago "we'll warn you 24 hours before if flooding gets bad" I asked if any of his staff was clair voyant?

I'm not bashing, I'm just annoyed with meaningless statements and announcements from who ever they come <_<

You can make an educated guess if a flood is due within 24 hours and often know for certain. So nothing wrong with this announcement. Why don't you help instead of posting pointless comments?
