Bus overturns in Mexico City, killing at least nine

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- At least nine people were killed on early Monday morning when a public transportation minibus overturned in the Mexico City metropolitan area, police said. More than a dozen others were injured.

The accident happened at around 7:54 a.m. local time on the Huizquilucan-Naucalpan highway, near the el Obraja bus stop, in the State of Mexico. The minibus, carrying nearly 30 people, was heading towards the Cuatro Caminos bus terminal.

Municipal Police Director Gerardo Oyervidez confirmed the deaths of at least nine people while another 16 people were transported to local hospitals in Naucalpan, Toluca and Lerma. Civil Protection emergency teams rushed to scene to carry out rescue operations.

An investigation has been launched, but preliminary reports suggest that excess speeding and a possible technical failure in the bus caused the deadly accident.
