13 Wal-Mart stores in China reopen after pork scandal

2011-10-26 03:59:41 GMT+7 (ICT)

CHONGQING (BNO NEWS) -- Thirteen Wal-Mart stores in southwest China reopened on Tuesday after local authorities closed them down for 15 days for selling incorrectly labelled pork products, state-run media reported.

The Chongqing Administration of Industry and Commerce conducted twice daily inspections of the stores during the closure period while the company set up supervisory teams to improve management and overhaul product labeling. The headquarters of Wal-Mart in China has sent a 60-member working team to Chongqing for the rectification work.

Wal-Mart was ordered to close the stores and pay a fine of 2.69 million yuan (423,000 U.S. dollars) after the stores were found to be selling ordinary pork labelled as more expensive organic meat. The Chongqing Wal-Mart stores confirmed they will improve the quality control system and set up a management monitoring mechanism for all goods for sale.

"All these measures are all taken to better protect customers' interests by facing the questions sincerely and striving to make improvements," said Del Sloneker, senior vice president of Wal-Mart stores in China.

Wal-Mart has been sanctioned by the local government 21 times since 2006 for various violations, including selling food past its expiry date and false advertising.
