ACCRA (BNO NEWS) -- At least five people were killed on early Wednesday morning when heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in the Ghanaian capital of Accra and the surrounding region, local media reported.

The heavy rainfall began at around midnight local time, flooding large parts of the Greater Accra Region which includes the cities of Accra and Tema. Scores of streets in the capital were flooded, preventing people from leaving their homes.

Peace FM reported that water reached window levels in some areas as residents desperately tried to save their property. Some residents were forced to climb on their roofs as they waited for assistance from emergency services, which includes the Ghanaian military.

The Ministry of Education asked students in the capital region not to go to school and many companies in the capital, including Vodafone, closed their offices, Peace FM reported. Rail services were also suspended.

At least five people were reported killed in the Greater Accra Region, four of them at Adenta and one at Odawna. An unknown number of others was said to be injured.

Accra is in a low-lying area and frequently experiences floods during the rainy season which runs from July through November. Climate experts believe the entire region could be permanently underwater within the next 80 years.
