Is it possible to do this journey and not have to go to BKK first.

Or anywhere near to Chanthaburi.

You don't have to go anywhere near Bangkok.

Smart a** :D:D

Im only asking a question can y get from Nong Kai to Rayong then to Chantaburi

Can it be done by train and bus and how.

Actually I did not notice any mention of Nong Khai or Rayong but of corse you can get to Chantaburi from them but the normal route does not seem to be what you want. You may be able to find bus connections that would allow you to bypass Bangkok but by train it would normally be Bangkok first. I would get off at Don Muang Station and take taxi or proceed across sky bridge to Airport and take Airport Bus to Eastern Bus Terminal at Soi Ekamai to get special 32 seat bus to Chantaburi which leave every 30 minutes from 0400-2400.
