Police to crack down on mobile porn

BANGKOK: -- Many VCD rental shops offer an easy-to-use technique to download pornographic pictures onto mobile phones and charge their clients Bt20 per download, Provincial Police Region 5 deputy commissioner Maj-General Phanwat Sriwalai said yesterday.

He said such shops operated in shopping areas including the well-known Night Bazaar.

“We are going to get deep into this business and arrest all wrongdoers. With such services, it’s no longer difficult to put sex photos on to mobile phones’ display screens,” Phanwat said at a press conference.

He also announced the seizure of 34,000 pornographic and unlicensed VCDs and the arrests of 29 suspects during operations by more than 50 police officers.

Chiang Mai police deputy chief Colonel Chamnarn Ruadrew said police would investigate further to check whether there were big investors behind such illegal operations.

“The business has a large teenage customer base,” he said.
