I have an older HTC touch pro, bought in Europe. By accident found out that the european model has HSDPA on 900 Mhz (850 Mhz for all non European models), so mine does 3G on AIS/One2call.

Now, when my phone settings are on auto (automatically switch between GSM and WCDMA), the thing eats through my battery in 10 hours flat. Without using it!.

Forcing it to GSM only, which stops it detecting/using 3G, and it goes back to normal, i.e. about 36 to 48 hours of battery with average use. Even heavy use, both phon and data, and it would only need to be charged once a day.

When WCDMA is enabled, at the place where I spend most my time (which unfortunately is work :) ) it is constantly switching between WCDMA and GSM, indicated by either showing the E symbol for GSM (Edge), or the H symbol for WCDMA (HSPA).

So probably the constant scanning for the different networks seems to eat the battery. The phone usually is warm to the touch, indicating rather heavy use of the phone module.

Do any other phones have this problem when in areas with weakish 3G signal?

I can force it to WCDMA only, which seems to increase battery life, however at work the signal is weak, and drops away in places, which stops me from receiving phone calls...

It is very common for the phone to keep switching to the stronger signal (whether it be 2G or 3G). That is why some people like to lock it into 3G for fast speeds or 2G for better battery life. 3G uses battery up much faster than 2G. For use at work put it in 2G only mode and when you leave work put it back into automatic mode.
