Drinking Water In Thailand

Hey Guys,

I had a quick question regarding the large white 18ish litre bottles of drinking water you can get for 12baht from any local thai shop.

Does anybody know anything regarding the quality of this drinking water.

Cheers

From what I've seen at our local water supply place this water is from local ground water, filtered, and treated through a big water treatment machine. I've used this sort of water for many years and I have no problem using it for drinking water. A few years ago my wife decided she preferred the 'shop' bottled water. For me it's much the same as I have no idea about the pedigree of that water. Now that bottled water in the shops is in short supply we are back to using the big white bottle refills that cost us 10 baht.

I understood it was recycled toilet water so its absolutely sterile and has no nutrients that comes with normal water....Ive also seen some of these people filling up with garden hoses. OK to cook with but not to drink me thinks

Saying it's 'recycled toilet water' is a bit extreme. I said 'ground water' .... I would agree maybe best to boil first and use for coffee/tea or for cooking. But ... is there any standard or quality control on shop bottled water ???

Thailand is not Singapore where they have 'new water'.

The water is good, but, check the inside of the white, non-see-through bottles. It's the bottle cleaning process you have to worry about. I used to see green algae in some of those bottles.,

Yes, I've noticed that green algae on a few occasions.

If the bottles are non- see through full of water and sealed so how can you check for green algae?

its treated with reverse osmosis, so any water can be used including sea water. However Kata Greenwaters supply is a deep well, 80 meters

its 10 baht for 20 liters, and I have been using it for 9 years. great placed in cooling dispenser

bottled water at silly prices is the same product.

reverse osmosis removes any bacteria and unfortunately also any minerals from the water

UV rays remove bacterias only, so keeps the minerals

if you dont like the whitish 20 liters, pay a little extra for the clear ones. same water, different bottles

You can see through the bottles even though they are not clear plastic and there is nothing wrong with the water

We use it all the time and also buy the small 600ML bottles as well for the bedroom, guests etc

My whole family including the kids and baby have been drinking this water straight out of the bottles for years with no ill effect.

Yes sometimes you can get some algae inside but TIT and we still drink it.

If you leave them in the sun they turn green, which says something about the trace elements in the water.

I prefer the clear refillable bottles from SPA in Thalang. They provide almost all the bottled water to the hotels in Phuket. Only 25 Bt for an 18.9 litre refill. Some water suppliers in Phuket stock the big bottles, but not many. I go to the factory once a month and get 6 or 7 refills at a time.
