TAKORADI, GHANA (BNO NEWS) -- Two people were crushed to death on Monday when a telecom mast fell down in the western port city of Takoradi in southwest Ghana, officials said on Tuesday.

Two workers of the telecom engineering company IPF Mast Construction Company Ltd were dismantling the obsolete mast when it fell down, crushing them to death. They were in the company of six other colleagues when the accident took place at Mpohor.

Police identified the deceased as Paul Opare, 30, and Solomon Babbey, 31. Speaking to the Xinhua news agency, Kwesimintsim District Police Commander D.S. P Ayamga Aklogo Yakubu said the company had been contracted by Mobile Telecoms Network, Ghana's largest mobile telephone company, to erect a mast for them.

"But upon reaching the location, the company realized there was an obsolete mast on site, so the two were asked to climb and dismantle it," Yakubu told Xinhua. "Paul Opare died instantly but Solomon Gabby was later confirmed dead at the Effiakwesimintim Regional Hospital where he was rushed to."

Authorities are investigating the accident.
