Kid'S Bikes

Looking to buy a couple of bicycles for my kids. New or used and something a bit better than the cheap toy bikes I see around. Anybody have any or any suggestions or ideas. Come to think of it since I'm in a pretty good mood today I'll even welcome a few wise ass comments.

Thanks

JC

They are 107 cm and 122 cm tall. Both 6 & 8 yrs. old boys. Hoping to find something in the style of Mt. Bike w/gears so don't think gender matters and both proficient on two wheels. As they are young so I would like something on the larger size for them to leave room to grow. See some Japanese one's that you switch the gears by turning the handlebar handles, Bridgestone brand, for $3000 bht. Anybody familiar w/there and have an opinion?

I agree that most kids bikes available here are rubbish and a complete waste of money. I managed to pick up an 8 gear (twist grip) 20 inch wheel Japanese bike for my 10 year old from a bike shop on Chiang Moi road called Top Bikes. It's a really nice bike for 2,500 Baht. A step up would be to order a new Trek 16" or 20" wheel from Chaitawat Bike Shop for I think 10 or 12K Baht - I've told him he can have one of these if he rides regularly with me on the one he has now.

Chaitawat is one of my favourite bike shops with very friendly and helpful owners, and they sometimes have the odd good quality second-hand bike for sale too; although you'd be lucky to get a kids one I think.

A list of most Chiang Mai bike shops can be found here: http://bicyclethailand.com/bike-stores/#chiang-mai

Depending on your location - important also in return access for maintenance, repair, and business relationship (i.e. discounts) - you might also consider Lamphun and Pa Sang areas. Green Bike (small shop) about 100m north of Suanboon and Lamphun technical schools, and Pa Sang Bike (very large) carry most Taiwanese makes (Trek, Giant, Bianchi, Merida, etc ...). The Pa Sang shop would seem to specialise in kids' bikes. I've had positive experiences at both, and without the hassle of negotiating the Chiangmai moat madness, traffic and parking.

I think LA bikes are fine. Clearly they're not super high quality, but they work just fine, and LA also provides good service.

We bought a small bike for my daughter 3-4 years ago and it's still just fine, even though she's now outgrown it. We bought a bigger bike, also from LA.

Two branches that I can recommend are the4 following:

Mahidol Road, North of Niyom Panich but on the other side of the road. (So on the left when driving towards airport plaza, coming from the SW moat corner.

The other branch is on the inside moat, just after rounding Sriphoom corner. (So that's the NE corner)

Again, if you're a bike snob then these bikes wont turn heads in Manhattan. But there's nothing wrong with them, get the job done and are serviceable.

I agree. Nothing wrong with them. I got my bike there 2 years ago or more and have never had a problem. Components are good names like Shimano, etc. I've taken it to be serviced, oiled, etc. 3 times and they have never charged me. Great customer service. Every time I'm there, I always see people buying their kids bikes.

The youngest boy (107 cm) need maximum a 16" wheel bike, LA should be fine but they are very heavy.

For the oldest boy 122 cm I would recommend the Trek MT 60, he will able to use it until he is about 130 cm something and by then his younger brother will take over that bike. The oldest can start to use a Trek 220 by then until 145 cm. Trek is more expensive but the bike will be used by both of them and will have a better resale value than the LA.

And yes, gender can have an influence by the choice of bike. Frame design and color, just to mention two.

And yes, an over sized frame can be dangerous for a kid.
