Help! I Need To Write A Play About The Bangkok Floods - Any Ideas?

As you've probably read, my school has kindly asked me to write a play for them huh.gif. It's my 4th day as a teacher, and I am completely unsure of what to do.

The play will be for a school competition and will be shown NEXT FRIDAY (11th Nov)!!! blink.gif But I actually feel quite privilaged to have had this much notice out here!

The play will have to last around 5 minutes, be in English, and the pre-chosen topic is concerning the Bangkok flooding.

I have been told that I will have a cast of 5 (4 girls and 1 boy) who are M3 so aged around 15 and should be fairly good at English...however i'm more concerned with their confidence than ability. As 5 minutes worth of dialogue is actually quite long!

The students will have minimal props/costumes, so hopefully something basic can be knocked together.

Any ideas or suggestions would be forever appreciated! I literally don't know where to start!

No idea, but just to get the ball rolling for you, have one of the gals dressed as a Mermaid.

(If you have enough action, you can cut down on the dialogue.)

How about "The Day of the Sewer Rats," for a title. Most of the players are center stage, dressed up in rat costumes, feigning swimming around a lot of floating garbage. Meanwhile, over at the left side, Ying Luck stands at a lectern with a camera pointed at her face and just cries, big crocodile tears rolling down her cheeks. Across the stage, far right, a group of folks dressed in yellow shirts stand holding armfuls of money amidst millions of floating waterlogged baht, wailing, "This wasn't supposed to happen to us!" The play ends with the amplified sound of a flushing toilet and everybody is swept off the stage.

Once saw one about flooding while I was teaching in Nong Chang, it had just been flooded before school started.

It was about a woman that would not listen to her friends and evacuate.

First they call her on the phone, explain the situation and try to get her to go. She says no she will be alright.

Second they drive up to her house and try to get her to go. She still won't go

Next, she's on the second floor- a chair will do- and they come in a boat and try to get her to go. She still won't.

Next she's on the roof of her house - a table will do- and they come in a helicopter and try to get her to go. She still won't.

hehn she's swimming in the water yelling for help but there's no one there they have all left.

Costumes are not a problem, Props are easy with chair and talble for the house and chairs and future board for the car, boat and helicopter

Script is easy.

Just an idea that I saw .

Get them to educate others about floods, use the ideas that the guys had with the Blue Whales, could be done in Thai and English, which would educate others as well as show their language abilities.

There's some really good ideas here, THANKS!!! jap.gif

However, I found out today that all ideas suggested would be dismissed. The Thai teacher who asked me to write the play pretty much told to use her idea....so the panic was a complete waste!

The play will now be a 'funny' news report. She pretty much had it scripted when she was explaining her idea to me. Why ask me in the first place?

I'm sure some of these ideas will come in handy at some point for someone though!
