NEW DELHI (BNO NEWS) -- At least 25 Tibetans were detained in New Delhi on Wednesday for staging a protest outside the Chinese embassy and allegedly attempting to illegally enter the embassy premises, local media reported.

According to police, the youth were shouting slogans demanding independence for Tibet from China. They also allegedly tried to enter the premises, but cops detained them and took them to a nearby police station, the Times of India reported on Thursday.

The protesters were later released after their names were registered, a senior police officer was quoted as saying. It was not immediately clear if they were facing any charges.

Tibetan youth also staged a similar protest outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi last month. They have been demanding independence following a series of self-immolations by Tibetan monks.

Last month, a Tibetan nun set herself on fire in protest against Chinese rule. She was the ninth Tibetan to have self-immolated this year.

The first incident happened on March 16 when 21-year-old Phuntsog from Kirti Monastery set himself on fire in Ngaba town. It happened on the third anniversary of protests in Ngaba during which at least 13 people were shot dead by Chinese security forces. Phuntsog later died.

The Dalai Lama has resided in the Indian city of Dharamsala, which is now the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-exile, since 1960 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule of Tibet. Dharamsala is also referred to as 'Little Lhasa', referring to the capital of Tibet.
