PM Thaksin Looks To The Stars For Answers

PM's cryptic astrology just baffling

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has again chosen to look to the heavens in responding to questions from the press.

"Mercury is moving backwards," Mr Thaksin responded after being asked by reporters about an announcement by First Infantry Division commander Maj-Gen Prin Suwannadhat that he would visit the offices of Managerdaily.

Maj-Gen Prin was Mr Thaksin's classmate in class 10 of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School.

He has accused Sondhi Limthongkul, the newspaper's founder, of offending His Majesty the King.

Despite his pledge, Maj-Gen Prin failed to show up at the offices of Manager daily yesterday, choosing instead to send four senior officers to deliver a letter of protest to Mr Sondhi.

It was the second consecutive day that Mr Thaksin had chosen to use astral terminology.

On Tuesday, Mr Thaksin referred to the stars when asked to comment on the suspension of the initial public offering (IPO) of Egat Plc, formerly the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

Mr Thaksin had previously insisted that the listing of Egat on the Stock Exchange of Thailand would improve its operational efficiency and transparency.

Reporters can now expect a period of silence, however, since Mr Thaksin has cancelled his "Meet the Press" session, normally held today, as he is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meeting in Busan today.

Astrologers, meanwhile, were scrambling to try and interpret the prime minister's astrological comments.

"Mercury symbolises communication and is also the star of Mr Thaksin's birthday," said leading astrologer Phinyo Pongcharoen.

He said Mr Thaksin might benefit from saying nothing, or instead talk about more positive things.

"Moving backwards," he said, might mean he ought to review his previous actions and perhaps avoid starting anything new.

Many people are unhappy with the government and this could possibly reach a critical stage where they can no longer bottle up their emotions, he said.

Not much to interpret. It's plain obvious the guy is a true space cadet.

Is this his puerile attempt at humour or has he been watching too many Star Trek repeats? :o

Either way, all he is succeeding in doing is showing a potentially global audience that he is one step away from the Funny Farm. :D

He'll be mooning out of a window of his limo next, as he waxes lyrical to the Press about the daily movements of Uranus... :D
