So last night I finished work and went round to my friends house where we commenced our annual Krathong making event. After working away for about an hour, with some wine and food inbetween, my spectacular 3 tier Krathong was ready - the final touches, rose petals, frangipani, the works - it looked wicked :D

Last but not least, a nail, some hair and a few baht (im skint remember!) and off we went to the river bit on Lamai beach to float them, make a wish and all that and hope they dont sink for bad luck.

So I sent my beautiful Krathong off on its way down the water, until it gets to the bridge where to my disgust there is a team of about 5 little sh#ts in the water, nicking the money out of them and sinking them all. <deleted>@king little ba@tards :o

Well so much for this much reverred religious ceremony that means so much to Thai people! Not one Thai adult around batted an eye lid. Even a couple of the kids' mums were sat down nearby with a wee picnic!

So, fair enough - nick the cash, but at least wait until the crowds have gone - no shame at all :D

Anyway, that was that - finished off the rest of the festival watching the katoey cabaret show. Can you imagine that at a church fete in England!

Wow, kids doing that cr@p here would get in serious trouble with their parents. Never seen anything like that before. You sure they were Thai?

Quizzed my staff and they have heard of it in Bangkok and other big cities but not here. One of them laughed and said its because the krathongs head out to sea so they don't get the chance.

Just a matter of time, I suspect :o

Next year you should get a 9 volt battery and a few wires, you could give them a shock in more ways than one! I did this once as a kid but can't remember how now something to do with wrapping the wire round a nail, but you can make the equivalent of one of those electric shock things that stops animals straying from a field. Or you could just view this as an alternative to a charitable donation. As for kids here in London you'd be lucky they didn't rob you before you put the vessel in the water!

:o We did discuss this kind of thing actually - we figured we had a year to get it perfect :D

There were kids doing the same at Chaweng lake at the bridge that goes over to Soi Reggae. They were kind of staying in the shadows but still blatantly obvious what they were up to. Again no one seemed to bat an eyelid. Thieving little gits !!
