I am being told that it will be very difficult to have my windows installed with the screen on the outside. Anyone successful doing this?

I understand that I may just have to accept the Thai way but thought I would take a shot. Already read the thread in the Housing forum.

Yes you can get them fitted on the outside but its better to have sliding windows rather than those that open outward and sliding mosquito screens to match. If you need a contact number , pm me and I will pass it on.

The thing you need to worry about is if the windows are designed to have the screens on the inside or the outside. If you just turn them around the other way from the way they are designed, you will end up funneling water into your house the next time it rains sideways.

So the question is if you can source the kind you want. The guy we used couldn’t source what I wanted and we have too darn many windows to dick around with, so I went with what he had in black. Now I quite like them, and prefer the hard wind and rain hitting the glass instead of shredding the screens. The screens get more than enough dirt, wear and tear, and the like, during normal daytime use. We close everything up at night. (But then again I am pretty sure I already mentioned all this to you previously.)

no problem in Pattaya, i got upstairs and main rooms inside and doors and sliding doors on the outside. its stupid having them on the inside, ful of mozzies, then you open them to close the doors, mozzies then come... inside

Not only possible, but demand it! There is no logical reason what-so-frikken-ever that screens should be on the inside. If worse comes to worse, drill some weep holes on the slider tracks so collected rain water can drain off. Besides, most newer houses have tile floors anyway. Are your floors tile? Is so....don't worry about it, ever. I got screwed on that bullshit ass-backwards crap on my windows...and am very unhappy with it....not that I will let it ruin my day or anything. I too, have learned to live with it...I just choose not to think about it until I read threads like this one. But on the sunny side of things.....it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Also, if it is new construction....specify double slider windows so you can clean them easier....I have one set that isn't and it is a chore to get the crap out of the slider tracks and to clean the window. If you want it done to your specs, you might need to hot-nose the job to get it done right. ett

If the screens are on the outside then you never have to fool with them other than a cleaning with a garden hose a few times a year. They also have the added benefit of providing some sunlight/UV blocking prior to the window. When they are on the inside you have to open and close them every time you want to open or close a window which is complicated by security bars. You also normally have to remove them for cleaning which is again complicated by security bars. Again not a big deal but I would rather have them on the outside and miss VF's rain drops hitting the windows.

On a Lark today we took a walk from Central to Home mart. I wanted to ask if they had a catalog for me to order windows. We were told at the desk and by a salesman that they did not sell windows. I decided to walk around and see if they had any tools. While doing that my better half called me to look at patio doors that looked superior. When I pulled back the door, lo and behold there were US type quality windows to each side and back. Sliding, the first double hung window I have seen in Thailand and louvered. AND THEY ALL HAD SCREENS ON THE OUTSIDE . Civilization has come to Chiang Rai. Now I need to talk to my engineer to see if there are any issues to be resolved.

Just have to ask. Anyone seen, in the rai or otherwise, double pane (thermal in canada) with the built in blinds between the panes? Never clean, never fuss. I have accepted that when I walk in a store and ask "do you have ??" I often get "no have" and see it hanging on their wall, or ask "maybe other store have?" and get "no", ask "other store Chiang Rai" and get "maybe Bangkok" only to find it 2 stores down. Just part of shopping now and I accept this as normal. Asking here is so much simpler. :jap:

Your biggest endeavor will be getting the finished rough opening (after plumbing the edges and leveling the top and bottom) to match exactly or a wee bit oversized (~5mm?) so the unit will fit . Fixed glass or even sliding glass does not hammer and pound into an opening that is not big enough . If you go this route (buying pre-made)...make a plywood or equivalent jig, the exact size you will need for the finished window plus a bit of sealant, making sure it is square and using that to make the finished window openings with. It seems like here in Thailand, house builders do it like we refer to in the recording industry...we will fix it in the mix. And by the time a window opening is plumb and level (and subsequently square) it is what ever dimensions it is. That is why most windows are made for each and every opening in a house. I have seen them pour concrete without any thought about what comes next, only to get the hammer and chisel out and start chipping away...it seems this is the Thai way . In my past lifetime, I have only installed no less than several thousand windows....all pre-made, but in a country where there are standards and the ability to construct accordingly. Goodluck....ett

That is the kind of windows I have in the US, i.e. Pella Designer Series with internal mini blinds. They are quite expensive in the US. I can't imagine what they would cost if you could (which I doubt) get them here.

My build philosophy was to take what was easily available and adapt it to my needs rather than to insist that some preexisting wish list had to be filled to the letter. You can source almost anything if cost is no issue. If like most, cost is a crucial element of the build, one can get more bang for the buck by being pragmatic about how to proceed.

When you pull the window closed the chrome bar locks into a U shape bracket in the inside. I will photograph later and post it for you.
