LASHKARGAH, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A district police chief was among three people killed on late Sunday afternoon as a result of a roadside bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, officials confirmed on Monday evening.

The attack happened at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday when a police vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Majdak area of southern Helmand province. The vehicle was carrying Gerimsir district police chief Saifullah Rashidi and two of his guards.

The guards and Rashidi, who previously served as the police chief of Greshk district, were all killed in the explosion. A fourth police officer was injured and taken to a local hospital.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack.
