Hi,

I thought I would apply online for my sons first passport, born in the UK to Thai mum, UK father.

Has a UK birth certificate.

After entering fathers details, mothers details etc.. the form states that it would be beneficial (support the application) for the application to list maternal grandparents (mothers side) their dates of birth, date of marriage etc... (they are Thai)

Mother has ILR in the UK anyway.

Anyone with experience of this? Am I as well to just send the paper application off? Or would I expect to hear back from them requesting more information anyway?

Many Thanks,

Shug

I just did this from the Thailand end (child born in Thailand to Thai mother)

No questions at all like this on any forms here (paper form from the British Consulate).

Didn't even need The mothers birth certificate, just her ID card (and translation).

Passport arrived in approx 5 weeks.

Don't recall this when applying for my step-daughter's first British passport, but that was some years ago and she acquired British nationality through registration, not birth.

You say that the form says it may be beneficial, not that it's required, so I wouldn't worry too much if you can't enter the information, but if you can then do so.

Don't forget to get a Thai passport for the child as well; if he enters Thailand with a British passport he will be treated as British and so subject to the usual time restrictions etc.; enter on a Thai passport and he will be treated as Thai with no restrictions on his stay etc. See Royal Thai Embassy.

It's also a good idea for your wife to be naturlaised as British and obtain a British passport as soon as she is eligible. Then no need for visas if traveling in Europe etc.. See Requirements for naturalisation if you are married to or the civil partner of a British citizen.

Both the UK and Thailand allow dual nationality.
