Issan seemed mostly flat in the few times that I have traveled there, but there may be a few places to escape the heat and camp in the cool>> Know of any??

The Emerald Triangle has some good camping sites, but you don't want to go away from the Government run places. Bandits, poachers, illegal loggers, smugglers etc and mines in some areas. Add to that there are so nasty animals. Jim

I feel that camping in Thailand would be safer than a lot of places in the US.....in 12 yrs and a lot of exploring the backroads [and sleazy sois]< I've never felt threatened, except for the occasional drunk and they were quite harmless. A simple rule of thumb that applies to camping anywhere is just use common sense.

So, back to 'cool places to camp in Issan'.....any national parks that anyone could suggest??

The Wife wants to drag me to Hot Surin, so a place within 5 hrs would be ideal.

Thanks....

Loei is most probably the coolest place in Isarn. Some very nice attractions there.I am told. So Google it -you might just get some interesting suggestions. But Isarn, plaes like Buriram ,Surin is nowhere near as hot now ,as it was about 15 odd years ago

vs_red.gifMountains and waterfalls are present in the Isaan region just as they are in other parts of Thailand. In which province in Isaan is the highest mountain located?

  • Loei Province. The three highest points in Isaan are all in Loei Province. Phu Luang is the highest mountain, followed by Phu Suan Sai and Phu Ruea. Phu Kradeung Mountain is another of the higher points in Loei and is popular with Isaan and Thai adventurers, especially around the New Year's holiday. Hikers can pay to have their packs carried up the mountain and camping is popular during this time.

I live about 50 kilometers south of Loei city. My favorite watering hole is up the mountain near Kun Ming. This is called Kun Ming of Thailand because the rock formations resemble Kunming of China. The elevation is only about 600 to 700 meters but it is noticeably cooler than the highway 201 turnoff in Nong Hin. There are several places where you could set up a tent and be able to park very near your tent.

If anyone is interested, I can give you more information. The GPS coordinates are N17.05602 E101.77241 to the first area and my watering hole. And yes, Loei has the dubious distinction of being the coldest province in Thailand.
