Cnx To Bkk - Any Low Cost Airlines Have Baggage Check Thru?

endure

The whole concept of Low Cost Carriers is to cut out those elements that add to operating costs. So if you want to select on price expect no services beyond the most basic. To operate systems & employ staff to manage baggage transfer is complex & costly, which that is why you pay more. So, it is a question of what is it worth for you to have the convenience of checked-through baggage? And as for the fact that you have to wait a bit longer in Suv, the same argument applies. If you want to fly when it suits you then expect to have to pay for the convenience. You pays your money & takes your choice!!!

Bangkok Airways is a low cost carrier (whose flights to BKK on the day I want are cheaper than either Nok or Airasia) yet they manage to offer both baggage check through and the issuance of boarding passes for all legs of a flight to the UK included in their price. Pity their last flight is at 7pm as I said.

I agree, no charge for 30Kg of luggage as well and the use of a lounge.

Re BKK Airways....."and the issuance of boarding passes for all legs of a flight to the UK included in their price'

A few months ago I flew with BKK Airways to BKK, then Eva to LHR with my luggage checked through from CNX to LHR......the Eva Air boarding pass was not issued in CNX. That was issued in BKK at an Eva desk inside International Departures. There was a girl waiting immediately as I got off the Bangkok Airways CNX-BKK flight with my name on a board, she escorted me to (via a bus) the Eva Air desk.

From their site.....

Q:What is the luggage allowance for Bangkok Airways ?

A:We allow 20 kgs for adult/child, 10 kgs for infant and 30 kgs for Frequent Flyer Member (FFP).

And the FFP card can be got on-line, before your first flight with them, hence the concession is available to all who want it. :)

Welcome to Chiang Mai !

One minor problem of living up here, compared to Pattaya/Jomtien or Bangkok or Hua-Hin/Cha-Am, is the 1-hour flight plus connection-time to reach the main international gateway at Swampy (Suvarnabhumi), oh well. :(

Low-Cost-Carriers point-to-point are Air Asia, who tend to add-on a lot of costs but do go to BKK, or Nok-Air (good !) & One-Two-Go (Google Phuket crash), who fly (in normal non-flooded times) to the old airport at Don Muang (airport-code DMK). Prices vary but 1500B-2000B each-way are typical.

Bangkok Airways are a full-service airline (slogan 'Asia's Boutique Airline') who fly to Swampy, have a useful FF-Program, and whose web-site currently has prices from B1,890 (with limited availability). Many of us view them as a good alternative ... as long as the price stays low-ish. They can often book your luggage straight-through to your final destination, you clear Immigration here (saves a bit of time & 'aggro'), and go to the onward-carrier's transfer-desk in Bangkok.

Thai Airways is the national-carrier hubbed at BKK which can often charge more (anything under B5.5k return is a relative bargain !), are a Star-Alliance member with better connections to many (but not all !) international-carriers, and use clean but slightly-elderly aircraft which tend to be full. They'll take more responsibility if you miss a connection. Their former high-frequency on this route is now a distant memory !

You pays your money, and takes your choice.

The comfortable VIP-bus to Bangkok (takes perhaps 8 hours and runs daytime or overnight) costs several hundred Baht each way, but you then need to get from Mor-Chit (Northern Bus Station) to the airport, with all your luggage.

The grubby train takes forever and is often late, but has air-con sleepers for about 800B or reclining-seats for 450B, and arrives direct into Hualumpong in central-Bangkok with a stop at Don Muang about an hour before. There's a limited bus-service from Don Muang (old airport) to Swampy (new airport). The railway has a period charm, which some of us appreciate, if we're not in-a-hurry.

Happy Travels ! B)

I presume your are bringing loads of luggage with you so I would suggest you join Bangkok Airways Frequent Flyer Program, do it on-line, and then you are able to carry 30Kg check in and also hand luggage.

Usually the flight is just under 2000 Baht one way, Air Asia do have some cheap promotions but by the time you've added on all the extras, it's probably not worth it.

It's also worth asking the airline you're flying with to Thailand if they will check the luggage straight through to Chiang Mai. They will not do that if your flying with Air Asia but may do if you're using Bangkok Airways.

My point was that the standard baggage allowance is 20kgs not 30kgs, unless you join the FFP which another poster has suggested.

THANK YOU;

We are moving from Switzerland, well my wife is, but i have to clean up here in mexico and will be leaving from here to chiang mai. not the easiest thing to do considering that i do not wish to stop in the united states. they require a biometric passport and i still have the old passport so this could cause problems. this means that i have to fly to vancouver, my home country, and from there to chiang mai. i might consider starting my travel points collection on a favoured thai airline there if the price is right. not cheap considering that because i am a big guy, i will have to buy a business class ticket. sigh.
