bells88 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Hi guys, Does anyone teach 1-2-1 lessons? A friend of a friend has asked for english lessons but I'm not too sure what a reasonable price to charge is? Any help would be great! Thanks
beano2274 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I used to charge 450 for 1 Student per hour, 400 each for 2 students per hour, 300 each for 3 students per hour, 250 each for 4 and 200 each for 5. I know of people who charge more.

ignis Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 You must be BKK folk ?? In the next Village to me, Private 1 or 1 Thai or English are the same price 5,500 baht for 40 hours.. Group of 3 = 3,000 baht.
Ijustwannateach Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Some rough things to think about when you're putting a price on your time: Yup, more of a premium in BKK. The transportation alone can be 40-50B++ and 30min each way, and that's if they're on the quickest part of the public transport- easily burning 100B of the first hourly fee. Maybe I'm lazy now, but I wouldn't travel more than 20min unless I'm pretty much guaranteed at least 2 hours of work or a really nice pay rate. More money if it's not just English (like math or science or a higher level tech subject in English). More money for more distance. More money for more students. Baseline for Bangkok- 400B/hr recommended minimum, and I would only do that as a favour for someone I knew well that would basically show up on my doorstep. If it's so far away or logistically challenging that they won't pay the fee that would make it reasonable, you probably aren't placed well enough to accept that job. Look for something more local or plan a move to where there's more work. If it's through an agency- and it had better be a good agency- then I would accept slightly lower rates for longer, fairly guaranteed blocks of hours on a semi-predictable basis. It's often worth it. If it's not through an agency then some pretty clear guidelines need to be set up covering cancellations, rescheduling needs, etc. to protect the teacher (mainly) and to a lesser extent the student. I don't mind having the initial lesson be on a provisional basis with no further strings attached, but it still costs the same. Keep in mind that if the student is going to be long term (and those are the ones you want to meet) that the fee will more or less never rise with that student later (this seems to be the common practice by Thai teachers and other people doing freelance professional work here). However, if they're with you that long, it will probably have been worth the inflationary discount for commitment if you started with a fair price.
