I think it is called Dton Som Suk. It is really a tree. I haven't seen them for sale but have a big one in the corner of my garden. If you ask at Kamthieng market in CM you could probably find one. In the meantime I will try to take some cuttings but that takes a bit of time.

My wife said, Thank you too much. I will pm you.

That looks like a double layered hibiscus.

The flowers of the som suk look a little like an Ixora.

i agree that sure looks like a hibiscus...Chaba in Thai.....very common and easy to grow...

Well I'm 95% sure that's what I've got in the corner. It's been a while since I saw the flowers close up, but the leaves are a match. Can't remember what month it flowers.

Ashoka

Sok Nam is the Thai name; Som Suk is the N Thai name.

Hi Sally, I admire your persistence :-) also it's a pleasure to see a poster who's an expert in her field, if you'll excuse the weak pun!

In my short time on TV I think you're the 2nd or 3rd lady (or woman if you prefer) that's ventured onto the CR forum. Good luck:-)

Ha ha, by no means an expert, but a bit of a plant geek when I'm in the mood.

Hmm, 2nd or third lady - what happened to the other 2, did they get eaten ?

well given the interest in edible petals I guess that is a distinct possibility, but really I blush to think of it :-) also, given the potentially provocative title of the thread, I think it's a testimony to the good character of the gentlemen of the CR forum that so little fun has been made! Have a good evening :-)

Dear Folks, we found the plant at the flower garden near the barracks. The young man did not know, he called his mother and found it. They had three.

Thank you all for your contributions!

Some detail about the plant I found interesting:

Like Palas, Ashoka also have some religious values. People strongly believe that the founder of Buddhist religion and the doctrine of Nirvana, Sakyamuni, was born under an Ashoka tree.

All the Buddhists worship this tree. It is respected by the Hindus as well because they believe that this is the symbol of love and also dedicated directly to the God of Love, Kama Deva. Because of this religious value, the Buddhists and Hindus plant the tree round their temples. Also on `Ashok Shasthi` day, the Bengali women eat the flower buds and the Hindu women strongly believe that they will be able to protect their children if they drink the water in which the flowers have lain.
