Two bombs detonated by alarm clocks

Five minutes and 30 metres apart

WAEDAO HARAI MUHAMAD AYUB PATHAN

Bangkok Post 21st Nov.2005

Two bombs exploded five minutes apart in an old business area of Sungai

Kolok district, Narathiwat, yesterday injuring 12 people, while four

villagers were shot, one of them fatally, in other areas of the restive

South. A 10kg homemade bomb with an alarm-clock detonator and hidden in

a fruit basket sitting on a scale went off at 6.10am in front of the

deserted Niyom Pochana restaurant at soi 2 off Charoenkhet road.

The explosion blew in the metal security grid, shattered the

restaurant's glass doors and windows and left a metre-wide and

50cm-deep hole in the footpath. Bomb debris was scattered over the

street for 20m from the store.

As police were investigating a similar bomb blew up five minutes later

about 30m away at the entrance to a grocery store in the same alley. It

damaged the doors and walls of the shop. Reports said three policemen

were injured.

Twelve people, including a Malaysian national and a two-year-old boy,

received minor shrapnel wounds in the two bombings and were admitted to

Sungai Kolok Hospital.

Eleven of them were named: Pol Snr Sgt-Maj Khamnueng Mailaikanok, 47,

of Sungai Kolok police station, Pol Capt Jirapas Sengseng, 44,

detective Pol Sgt Sakkarin Yira, 37, Nuruddin Mongkolsilp, 37, Somsak

Usasukmongkol, 42, Hayimuhamad Nor Baha, 58, from Malaysia, Vijit

Benchulamart, Thanathap Wongprasopchai, 2, Wichian Dejchaisri, 44,

Samart Maliwan, 30, and Kitti Lorthammakhun, 68. Police blamed the

bombs on insurgents, and said they were targeting policemen and

innocent bystanders.

Last night Somjai Samkerd, a villager, was shot dead by a group of

armed men while talking with friends at his house at Ban Mu 4 in Yala's

Than To district, district police said.

The attackers fled the scene after the shooting and strewed spikes on

the road to prevent police following them.

Elsewhere, Abdul-azi Jehlae-useng, 54, a janitor at Bukit Pracha

Uppatham School which was torched last Tuesday, was shot twice in the

left arm by men on a motorcycle armed with a .38 pistol. He was

returning to his home in Ban Bukeh Tamong in Narathiwat's Cho Airong

district. Although badly wounded, he managed to flee to a nearby house.

He was later taken to Cho Airong Hospital and then transferred to

Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital in Narathiwat town.

Chuan sae Jia, 70, was shot in the chest and back by motorcycle gunmen

on Ban Lubohyoh road while on his way to Rangae district.

People in the nearby village helped him get to Cho Airong Hospital.

Later in Sungai Padi district, Somsri Paekrum, 39, who was five months

pregnant, was shot by two people on a motorcycle as she was delivering

milk on Sungai Padi-Sako road.

She was hit several times, receiving bullet wounds to the face and body

and was rushed to Sungai Padi Hospital and later referred to

neighbouring Sungai Kolok Hospital.

Police believed separatist militants were behind all the shootings.

Maybe they were aiming for 6.10 pm, but planted the bomb in the early hours of the morning. :o
