I beleive it is 6month but some places wont accept you without a full year left. Better you get a new passport asap rather than take the risk

I'm with Boo. Pretty sure it's 6 months but best to be safe, particularly as I believe the UK passport service are now offering up to 9 months credit against your unexpired passport (so you don't lose the remaining validity).

If you are getting a visa (advisable if you want to stay more than 30 days) your passport will need to be valid for at least the validity period of the visa.

You should get a new passport when down to less than a year validity but IATA (on Delta Airlines site) says a UK passport should be accepted as long as it covers the period of stay. But, like the wind, that is something that could change. Much better to be safe.
