Bahrain detonates 'package with wires' sent from Britain

2011-12-08 22:54:44 GMT+7 (ICT)

MANAMA (BNO NEWS) -- Security forces destroyed a suspicious package with wires at the international airport near the Bahraini capital of Manama on late Wednesday evening, the government said on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior said a package which arrived from the United Kingdom via Dubai by air freight was deemed suspicious because it contained wires. Airport police detonated the package because authorities believed it contained explosives.

However, after an examination of the package, the Director-General of Bahrain International Airport Police said the package contained no explosives but rather material which could be used to make explosives. Other details were not immediately released.

The British government said it was aware of the reports and launched an investigation.

The incident comes just days after an explosive device exploded near the British Embassy in the Ras Ruman area of Manama. The blast on Sunday evening damaged several vehicles but caused no casualties, officials said.
