Nepal Race as Flood Disaster Leaves Hundreds Dead 1,300 missing A second disaster may be formingRescue teams in Nepal and Tibet are racing against time after catastrophic flash floods killed at least 469 people and left more than 1,300 missing — while authorities warn that a newly formed lake could now burst and unleash another devastating wall of water. The floods tore through Himalayan valleys on Wednesday, destroying homes, roads, bridges and power infrastructure and leaving entire communities cut off. More than 100 people have already been rescued by the Nepalese army, with helicopters carrying badly injured survivors to Kathmandu for treatment. But thousands of families are still waiting for news. Hundreds of foreigners among the missingThe disaster has also become an international search operation. More than 500 foreigners were among those reported missing on the Nepalese side, including 177 Indians, 90 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons and 25 Canadians. Many were travelling through the region on pilgrimage or trekking expeditions, including visitors heading towards Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet. Bodies have reportedly been recovered hundreds of miles downstream as the enormous volume of water carried victims and debris far from the original disaster zone. Entire villages simply disappearedThe scale of destruction is difficult to comprehend. In Nepal's Rasuwa district, homes and infrastructure were swept away by water moving with such force that survivors compared it to the waves of the sea. One survivor, Girilal Budhathoki, returned to find his home gone and his wife and four children missing. “There is no update till now,” said another man searching for relatives from the village of Soley, where around 25 homes were reportedly almost completely destroyed. With electricity knocked out by damaged hydropower infrastructure, desperate relatives gathered outside military facilities where rescue operations were being coordinated, using mobile phone torches as they waited for information. Now comes the barrier lake threatThe immediate concern is that the disaster may not be over. A lake formed by debris blocking waterways near the flood zone has been rising, with Chinese authorities warning that the barrier could overflow or collapse. If the natural dam gives way, another enormous surge could race downstream into already devastated areas. Authorities have urged residents and rescuers to stay away from the danger zone. No earthquake caused the catastropheEarly reports suggested an earthquake might have triggered the disaster. But the US Geological Survey later said there had been no earthquake. Instead, the seismic signal initially interpreted as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was generated by the collapse of glacial rock and ice and the enormous movement of debris. The distinction matters because it points to a rapidly evolving Himalayan hazard rather than a conventional earthquake disaster. Tibet's silence raises questionsThe devastation on the Chinese side of the border remains much harder to assess. Tibet is one of China's most tightly controlled regions, and access for foreign journalists and independent researchers is heavily restricted. Chinese state media has reported rescue operations and confirmed only a small number of deaths, while reports from the Tibetan side suggest hundreds may still be missing. Human rights groups are now calling on Beijing to allow greater access to information and independent investigators. A humanitarian race against the clockThe UN has already released an initial $2 million for emergency medical care, shelter and clean water. But the immediate needs are enormous. Thousands of people have lost homes, family members and livelihoods. Roads and bridges needed to deliver assistance have been destroyed, while damaged water and sanitation systems raise the risk of disease. And hanging over the rescue operation is the barrier lake.
