Hi

On Wednesday I have to do a visa run. Together with the wife we've decided to do a run to the nearest point from Bangkok (On Nut side).

I reckon that Poi Pet (sp?) is probably the easiest (I drove there with the neighbours a few years ago).

SHOT IN THE DARK: Does anybody have the GPS co-ordinates of Poi Pet so that I can stick them into my car and go?

Cheers

I used this useful tool to get the coordinates for the border cross point in Aranyaprahtet:

13.661195747693823, 102.54973411560059

13-39.672 x 102-33.007

And remember, in addition to Mr Google, Google Earth can also be your friend, just find the spot and look for the Lats & Longs at the bottom of the screen.

Just remember that the format the GPS uses may not be the same as default display of other maps. We seem to have two totally different numbers in the last two posts which may well be the same place but using different systems?

Thanks for that guys.

I was able to enter Mac's co-ordinates into my car GPS.

Regarding Google Earth: Doh! Forgot about that. Not sure how to convert Maestro's co-ordinates into those provided by Mac so that I can enter them into the GPS.

No need to "convert" the coordinates. Most GPSes, I think, have several settings for coordinates, such as:

-- deg-min-seconds & decimal seconds

-- deg-min & decimal minutes, which is what I posted, and and have set on my Garmin, and on Google Earth

-- deg & decimal degrees, which is what Maestro posted.

Google Earth is the same, several options.

Agreed, but should you need to it's quite simple to convert. Since there are 60 minutes to the hour Maestro's coordinates 13.661195747693823, 102.54973411560059 can be converted by multiplying the decimals by 60:

13.661195747696823 = 13 + 60x0.661195747696823 = 13 39.67174486180938

102.54973411560059 = 102 + 60x0.54973411560059 = 102 32.98404693603540

Thanks for all the information guys, I certainly learned something via this post.

BUT!

What a bloody day. Started off great. I stuck the co-ordinates into the car GPS. Loaded up the wife and the MIL and off I went. I must admit that I didn't pay any real attention to road signs. The first hour or so I listened to Radio 5/CNN/Fox news then switched to music and chatting with the Mrs and MIL. I just listened to the instructions from the GPS. After about three and a half hours I arrived at the border crossing. Great.

I got my Cambodian visa then progressed to the Over Stay queue. Everything was going well, I coughed up the overstay and my old/new passports only to be told that immigration in Bangkok had forgot to put some kind of stamp in one of the passports and that I couldn't cross over (to Cambodia, not the afterlife) until I had gone to back BKK immigration and got the missing stamp. GROAN.

So I have to go to immigration tomorrow to try and determine what stamp is missing and then back to Poipet on Friday. Bloody 'ell.

All the best

Ha! The drama goes on.

I arrived at Chang Wattana Immigration and got a ticket for C1 (that was the department that looked at my passport and said that I needed to exit the country last week). I queued and finally got to speak to someone who said that I needed to queue at K2 for correcting stamps. Got a K2 ticket and queued only to be told that I need to complete the form to transfer my (expired) visa from my old passport to my new passport and queue for L (I thought that I was already in 'ell). I completed the form and got a new ticket (L95) and joined the L queue that was sitting at 65. Urghhh.

I finally got my turn. The old guy in uniform looked at my passports, looked at my form and scratched his head. He spoke to the senior (and quite attractive) officer behind him. I was told to go and speak with her. She said that they shouldn't have refused my exit and that everything was already in order. She then phoned Sa Gaew immigration and spoke with someone telling them that I'd be there tomorrow and to let me through. She wrote a note and stapled it to my old passport and gave me her phone number.

So, it's off back to Poipet tomorrow with both passports exactly the same as when they refused my exit.

Ho hum.

It now seems you have entry in an invalid (old) passport and trying to exit with the valid passport and that it is a visa entry? In the past this had to be transferred into the new passport by immigration but for last few months it is taken care of at a border if a visa entry (only extensions of stay require the stamp be transferred) so it appears the officer was not aware of the change and could not explain well and you had alphabet soup because of it.
