No crack at Bhumibhol Dam: EGAT

The Nation

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand today quashed the rumour that cracks were found at the Bhumibhol Dam in Tak province, saying that the dam remains strong.

EGAT Communications Director Tatree Riewcharoen said in a statement released today that surveillance at the dam has been lifted especially when the water level is over 90 per cent of capacity. A special task force was dispatched to survey the dam area and found no crack or other irregularities, he said.

Tatree added that a weekly check has been carried out at the dam and any irregularities would be immediately reported. Such inspection frequency has been done on a daily basis recently, due to the high water level.

"EGAT has closely checked and assessed the dam’s safety, with assistance from inside and outside experts. Another major check is due next month. The general public should rest assured of the dam’s safety," he said.

It looks like Thai Officials are confusing the 'past tense' and 'negative' forms of speech.

You should read:

Denied going => Went

Denied having => Had

Denied giving => Gave

etc.

Ah the vagaries of the English Language...

The headline had me confused. I had been reading a news report about drugs and when I saw the headline, I thought 'no crack', but heroin is available!

At any rate, this has me a little confused. Where did the idea that the dam was cracked come from?

I get a little worried whenever an official denies there is a problem.

Especially when the headline is the traditional Thai instant denial "No Crack Found....." Note the prominent "No" in these Thai denials. Thais seem to think that the use of "No" automatically conveys credibility and truth and reinforces the authority vested in. As in visiting a Thai doctor and attempting to inquire what is the problem and what is the treatment? Thais view questioning authority as an invasion of some sort of territorial province that is sacred because they've been bestowed with the gift of being Thai and in authority and don't have to reconcile their behavior and actions with anyone let alone irrelevant farangs.

Ahh, nothing like turning a story about a dam into bashing the Thais.

Good work there trooper, now have your milk and cookie.
