Police arrested a 55-year-old man early Friday for allegedly planting six homemade bombs at three spots in Bangkok.

The suspect, Jirawat Janphen, was paraded in front of reporters at the Metropolitan Police Bureau at 10 am without being allowed to answer reporters' questions at all.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung was the only one who talked to reporters during the press conference, which lasted only 20 minutes before it was abruptly ended. Chalerm was accompanied by Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Priewphan Damapong and Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt Gen Winai Thongsong and several other senior police officers.

Chalerm told the press conference that the suspect came from Sakon Nakhon and has been staying in Bangkok's Laksi district and has been hired to raise goats for the people in the area.

Chalerm alleged that Jirawat placed six homemade bombs at three spots. The deputy prime minister did not say how the man had obtained the homemade bombs.

Chalerm said Jirawat placed a bomb besides the building of Bangkok Bank, Soi Sukhumvit 77 branch. The bomb was supposed to be detonated with a remote control.

Two bombs were stuffed in a PVC pipe and left at the Wat Kingkaew Intersection and they were set to be detonated with a timing device.

Chalerm said the three other bombs were put inside PVC pipes and placed under a bridge on On Nuj Road in Lat Krabang district. They were also timed to explode.

Chalerm said the bomb squads of the Metropolitan Police had safely disposed all the bombs.

The deputy prime minister said the bombs appeared similarly made to those found on Rajdamnone Road.

Jirawat was charged with having explosives in possession without license. Chalerm said the suspect was arrested at 3 am at the Wat Kingkaew Intersection on a frontage road of the Bangkok-Chon Buri Montorway.

The suspect sat smiling with his face down during the press conference. He said he would testify only in court.

After reporters raised many questions for the suspect to answer, Chalerm, who was sitting beside him, cut short the press conference. Chalerm said he ended the press conference because Priewphan was very sleepy.

Chalerm concluded the press conference by asking Bangkokians to celebrate New Year holidays without having to worry about bomb attacks.

Bomb are not designed to go off on impact.

I think you'll find that home made bombs are not made to very exacting standards.

Yes just last year some red shirt departed for his eternal reward when the bomb he was working on went off.

yet another reason provided for evasiveness

It's hard to tell who is the biggest lier, Yingluck, Surapong or Chalerm. I would like to see the results of a national poll on this one.

Six bombs found and defused in eastern Bangkok

2011-12-16 12:05:29 GMT+7 (ICT)

BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- Thai police found and defused six home-made explosive devices at three separate locations in the capital of Bangkok on early Friday morning, officials said. One suspect has been arrested.

The six bombs were found at around 4 a.m. local time in eastern Bangkok. One explosive device was placed in front of a Bangkok Bank branch, two were found at a road intersection and three more were found under a bridge near a market.

Police said the bombs were found after officers arrested a man about an hour earlier on suspicion of planting a bomb at a traffic island in front of the Government Lottery Office (GLO) on December 6. The suspect then told police he had set bombs in three different locations.

According to the MCOT news agency, the suspect is a resident from Rayong province and was working with several others. He reportedly told police that the group had planned to place explosive devices in eight locations in Bangkok but only managed to do so at three locations.

Bomb disposal experts disabled the devices which were found on Friday. The device found on December 6 was said to be incomplete and would not have been able to explode. Police said it had been placed to cause panic.

The Thai government recently called for heightened vigilance amid the upcoming New Year's celebrations. On New Year's Eve in 2006, a series of explosions hit nine locations in Bangkok, killing three people and injuring nearly 40 others.

Just a co-incidence that the only times we see random bombs being planted around Bkk is when the current political mob, and their predecessors, are suffering from public image perception issues.

Wasn't any random bombing when the otherside's going got tough.

Maybe they should start bombing or burning the place down to gain public sympathy and win the next elections.

Funny how last years 'random bombings' abruptly stopped after the alleged brokering of 'a deal' by USA between Thaksin and Abhisit.... that lead to the election. And started up again when the PTP is in trouble across the land for flood mismanagement, and then Thaksin gets 'blocked' from his returning ploy.

Oh, just a coincidence right?

Funny how Thaksin is allegedly attacked by an inept bomber on his route to work as PM, just before the coup, and Gen. Panlop is in the think of that, and then is hanging with Sae Dang, and horrifying Chavalit nominating him as their Thai Revolutionary Army Chief.

Isn't it.

When Thaksin is in trouble bombs seem to go off.

Why is that?

Correction -- sorry, early morning hadn't had my coffee yet, now I see a bank name in the article. Still however, I wouldn't know where Bangkok Bank is along a 5+ KM road, perhaps a little more clarity is helpful.

bangkok bank address is soi ladkrabang 20 as mentioned in a follow up news (seen on this page).

Both Deputy PM Chalerm Yoobamroong and National Police chief Police General Priewpan Damapong inspected the crime scenes.

Seriously, such a coincidence. The police just happened to catch the suspect. Noticed him acting "suspiciously" and he confessed that he was "planting a bomb" Around the corner Both Deputy PM Chalerm Yoobamroong and National Police chief Police General Priewpan Damapong were waiting to enter the "crime scene" Luckily they were in the vicinity, probably tailing an influential figure at 3am..

Something really stinks to high heavens about this. The BIB just happen to know show up at 4am to defuse the six bombs placed by some poor guy hired to raise goats that smiles for the cameras and not allowed to answer any questions. And when the heat was put on by the reporters Chalerm cut short the press conference. Anyone believing this would have to be a complete idiot.

get scared, focus on your fears, give up your rights and we'll protect you. Thaksin tactics again. let's see what happens to this "terrorist", same as the others, nothing?

Bomb suspect denies involvement in attempted attacks

image_20111216130953457DB62A-D2C6-549B-FDAFAD23CFBDC8D1.jpg

BANGKOK, Dec 19 -- A suspect in attempted bombings in three Bangkok locations early this morning denied involvement, but police affirmed evidence confirming his wrongdoing and investigation is underway whether it would link to bomb placed in front of Government Lottery Office earlier this month.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung and National Police Chief Prewpan Dhamapong on Friday jointly told a press conference on the arrest of Jirawat Chanpeng, 45, a Sakon Nakhon native, who is a suspect in the attempted bombing at three locations with a total of six explosives.

Gen Prewpan said police have clues on the Bangkok incident, followed the suspect for some time and found he placed bombs at three locations late Thursday night.

Three homemade bombs were found at Khlong Nhong Prue U-turn bridge opposite Suvarnabhumi market.

The second location was beside Bangkok Bank’s branch inside Sukhumvit 77, where police found a homemade bomb meant to be triggered by remote control.

And the third location was at the motorway at the Soi Kanchanapisek 39 (Wat Kingkaew) entrance where police found two explosive devices with timers set for 12.55pm. The suspect was arrested at this location.

The suspect denied involvement and insisted on giving a statement only at court, and asserted that he has never attended any political gathering.

Mr Chalerm said that police did not believe that the suspect acted alone and that he must have expertise in making bombs.

The deputy premier said the bombs have strong potential to kill and that the police would further investigate possible linkages to the bomb placed near the Government Lottery Office earlier this month.

On Dec 6, a homemade bomb was found on a traffic island near the Government Lottery Office on Rajdamnoen Avenue. The bomb squad inspected the device and found that its circuits were incomplete and that it could not function, but it was believed to be placed there to cause a disturbance and unsettle the public. (off topic, the english teacher of my daughter's school thought that; alarm clock went off = alarm clock is broken)

Fair enough, you have to admit that colloquialism isn't at all logical.

And what you expect Thai-educated teachers to have a reasonable standard of English?

I've conducted "teacher training" sessions (supposed to be training on teaching methods) for Thai teachers of English, both in the government school and private sectors, and even the university-level one's usually wouldn't get past the second rung on any objective rating for basic English skills. They often know a lot about written grammar mechanics, but very low skills in actually communicating anything beyond shopping/survival/tourist needs. 99% of the time time the methodology course becomes a review of language basics, which aren't going to improve in a 10 or 20 hour course.

The fundamental problem is that those that hire and manage the so-called English teachers usually have a very low skill level, so aren't qualified themselves to judge/evaluate, but because they're the boss and have to let everyone think their level is much higher than it actually is, they can't ask for any outside help without losing face, and even if someone in the organisation does have a decent level of English, there isn't any socially acceptable way for them to be brought into the process to help out.

And for the same reasons they aren't able to bring someone in from the outside to help, God forbid a foreigner! The only way I've found it possible to help Thai teachers of English to improve is to set up completely secret sessions that the students and parents would never find out about, but 99% of the time the organisation isn't even willing to concede there's any problem in the first place.

Yes I know completely off topic, I've been a bad boy somebody spank me. . .

I am not much on conspiracy theories, but where do you find someone who is bright enough to assemble a bomb, but so stupid that the local constabulary can catch him?

Any idea of what his motives are?

Could it be that the whole story is "made up?" jap.gif
