Pattaya New Year checkpoints begin

PATTAYA: -- Pattaya’s annual temporary road safety campaign over the New Year Period has begun when the authorities attempt to educate local drivers on the dangers of driving drunk or without a safety helmet. On Wednesday afternoon a ceremony took place at the main checkpoint located on the Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya, in front of Big C, which will operate 24 hours a day until 4th January. It will be staffed by Traffic Police, Rescue Volunteers and motorbike technicians along with masseurs who would be delighted to offer drivers the opportunity to relax and ease their stress accumulated over the festive period. Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Itipon was there to urge drivers to remain safe and act responsibly over the coming days. In reality deaths on the roads of Pattaya will occur as a result of the New Year festivities and laws relating to the use of safety helmets for motorbike drivers and seat belts for those in larger vehicles will be largely ignored by drivers. For this reason we urge all drivers to remember that being intoxicated whilst in control of a motor vehicle can ultimately kill you and others
