QUETTA, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Unidentified gunmen kidnapped an employee with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the western Pakistani city of Quetta on Thursday, the agency confirmed on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. local time on Thursday when health program manager Khalil Rasjed Dale was on his way home from work in a car marked with ICRC emblems. The British national was kidnapped about 200 meters (650 yards) from an ICRC residence.

"The ICRC currently has no indication as to the abductors' identities or motives. Mr Dale's family was informed immediately," the agency said in a brief statement statement. "The ICRC is calling for the rapid and unconditional release of its kidnapped staff member."

Despite the incident, the Red Cross assured that it will continue its humanitarian work in Pakistan.

Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan which borders with Afghanistan, has seen frequent violence due to the presence of separatist insurgents and the Taliban. On Friday, a car bomb attack near the residence of former federal minister Naseer Mengal in Quetta left at least 16 people dead.
