PHUKET: -- Phuket City Police Superintendent Chonasit Wattanavrangku today met Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha to formally introduce himself and to deliver a New Year’s gift basket.

At the 11:30am meeting at Provincial Hall, Maj Gen Chonasit said his priority since he started work as the Phuket City police chief on December 29 has been to ensure the safety of the public during the New Year’s festivities at Saphan Hin, Patong Beach and Karon Beach.

“The safety precautions taken during the holiday period were successful,” he said.

Now safely through the holiday season, Maj Gen Chonasit plans to start cracking down on narcotics in local communities.

“We will ask the heads of communities and religious leaders to keep an eye on residents in their areas. We will also have police officers start educating these community leaders on their role in narcotic crackdowns in addition to incorporating them into an information network,” said Maj Gen Chonasit.

Next on the superintendent’s to-do-list is to resolve Phuket traffic jam issues.

“I have heard many complaints about the traffic jams in Phuket. I would like to ask people to follow traffic laws and to park only where it is permitted. This will help resolve some of the traffic problems,” he said.

Maj Gen Chonasit also explained that he plans to crack down on crime in general in Phuket in order to make the island safer for both residents and tourists.

“Even though I have never worked in Phuket, I have will serve Phuket. Please give me some time, so you can see my work and judge if it is as good as you would like it to be,” he said.

As was mentioned, no mention of jet ski or tuk tuk scams, but then those are probably above his pay grade.

He's been in the job for 10 days, give him a break.

Narcotic use is a big problem in Thai communities. It seriously damages family cohesion and the crime that comes from drug use affects every aspect of Thai society.

Has he said that he won't tackle crime that affects tourism? Surely his priority initially must be to concentrate on the problems that affect the majority.

Traffic congestion is a completely different matter that is down to the traffic police so that dealing with that wouldn't have any impact one way or another in the investigation of "tourist scams".

Still waiting and hoping to hear one of the BIB chiefs to say, "I'm going to do my job and bring trust and honor to the law enforcement profession in Thailand". One can dream.....

What would be the point of such a minor official doing this? He would just be seen as a troublemaker by his superiors, like a local neighborhood capo saying he's going to try to reform the his whole Mafia family.

And if someone like this actually tried to reduce corruption, he'd quickly be eliminated one way or another.

Dreaming such fantasy goals is one thing, but at least dream about realistic paths to get there. . .

How many weeks will it be until Phuket City Police Superintendent Chonasit Wattanavrangku becomes the same lethargic, corruption tainted toy policeman his predecessors became? What about the areas that affect tourism, such as the jet ski mafia, the tuk tuk mafia, the taxi mafia, the king power duty free mafia, the real estate mafia, etc., etc., etc? What about addressing local corrupt officials? Tourism is not important to Phuket?

even not the tuk-tuk maffia, but this belongs to the Governor...

If a serious crack down on drugs were to take place, this would mean having to crack down on the so called tuk tuk mafia. Who do you think moves the stuff? smile.png The tuk tuks drivers are the the couriers.
