Thailand to soon become bird flu free zone

BANGKOK: -- The Thai government will soon declare Thailand as a bird flu free zone with no more poultry in the kingdom infected with the H5N1 avian flu virus.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives reported the latest bird flu situation to the cabinet at its weekly meeting here on Tuesday, saying that there is now only one area in the kingdom which is under a close surveilance on an avian flu outbreak.

The only area under the state close observation is Wat Chalo Sub-district in Bang Kruay District of Nonthaburi Province on the outskirts of Bangkok, according to Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee.

"After November 29, if there is no more H5N1 virus found among poultry flocks in the sole observation area, all parts of Thailand will be free from bird flu outbreaks and the country can be declared a bird flu free zone," Dr. Surapong told a press conference after the cabinet meeting.

The Thai authorities will, however, continue to prevent any re-emergence of the deadly disease among local poultry flocks.

Dr. Surapong said with Thailand's success in containing three avian flu outbreaks so far, China had asked Thai experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to help address the avian flu problem in its various provinces.

THAILAND WILL REMAIN FREE FROM BIRD FLU AFTER THE 21-DAY SURVEILLANCE PERIOD ENDS TODAY

Thailand prepares to declare itself a bird-flu free country after the 21-day surveillance period ends today. Agriculture minister Khunying Sudarat Keyurapan (สุดารัตน์ เกยุราพันธุ์ ) said that currently only Chalor (ชะลอ) sub-district in Bang Gruay (บางกรวย) district in Nontaburi (นนทบุรี) remains under bird-flu surveillance, adding that today will be the last day of the 21-day surveillance period. She said that once the surveillance is lifted, Thailand will be temporarily free from bird flu, as there are no reports of additional outbreaks in other areas.

She said that officials have been instructed to be more careful and monitor the situation closely. There have been reports that Livestock officials went to cull ducks in Singburi (สิงห์บุรี) province, informing the raisers that the ducks had contracted bird flu, but there was no report of a new outbreak in the Livestock Development Department’s website.

Khunying Sudarat commented that the officials decided to kill the ducks first, as there were some problems with the results from lab tests, which could delay the officials’ work.

She insisted that the government does not conceal any information, adding that officials who are not transparent in their work will be relocated immediately.

A farang near -neighbour of mine reported a sick chicken to the village headman last Saturday and was told to kill the bird then bury it. Not satisfied by this response his wife rang the district office who sent out an inspector the same day. The next morning (Sunday) a team arrived with disinfecting chemicals which they sprayed his yard with and air rifles which they used to shoot his remaining five or six birds. The sick chicken was taken away for tests. Haven't heard anything yet.

You'd reckon this would be happening all over the country. What's all this crap about "a bird flu free country"!!

This is getting to some sort of sad joke. It’s coming and that is that. Perhaps this is some sort of way to provide some sense of false security. Look at what the VIP’s are doing to safeguard their families if you want to know what is not being said.

Deception disgusts me!!!!

The birds on the run are all hiding in the cracks on the runways at the new airport.

Nobody will ever think of looking there...probably fed up with the sight of it.. :o

Don't they know that the virus is carried by migrating birds as well, does this mean that they will have hunters all along the borders to prevent birds to cross in to Thailand. :o

Taksin has already solved that one.

All migratory birds now need a visa and medical certificate before they can enter the Kingdom.

...  and it's now back, with thousands of ducks in Songkhla being culled for having flu, so how many days did the 'freedom-from-bird-flu' last this time ?  :o

Wonder if they checked all those white paper doves they dropped on the south - aha was this a peace mission or a ploy to share the problems with the south??

Next they will declare LOS "Bird free" that will be a concern for most.

Boy dies of bird flu in Nakhon Nayok

Published on Dec 09 , 2005

A five-year-old boy has died of bird flu in Nakhon Nayok, marking the country's 14th death from the H5N1 virus, Public Health Minister Pinij Charusombat said Friday.

Pinij told a press conference that the boy died Wednesday in a hospital in Nakhon Nayok's Ongkharak district of province, a senior health ministry official said.

He said the boy fell sick on November 25 but his parents did not bring him straight to a hospital. Instead he was taken to tow clinics from November 28 to December 4 with no improvement in his condition.

The boy was taken to the Ongkharak district hospital on December 5 with lung infections but the condition was not clear that he had got bird flu.

However, his condition worsen on Tuesday.

Pinij said since it was not clear that the boy had direct contact with chicken, doctors treated him like a patient with general lung infections.

It was only Wednesday when it was clear that the boy had bird-flu symptom and doctors gave him tamiflu but it was already too late.

The latest death marks the 22nd confirmed case of bird flu in Thailand since the H5N1 virus was first detected here nearly two years ago.

Pinij said the boy became the fifth bird-flu this year.

Free of bird flu? I must wonder if they really believe what they try to tell the public. It certainly doesn't look like Thailand is free from this at all. :o
